Solena D.What is this goal doing

on my list in February 2013, and with no entries? Just shows how active I’ve been lately.

Well, I read some 30+ books last year. Some better, some worse, some way too shallow (had to be put down unread) and some very difficult to digest but very worth it. All in all, a good reading year. 3 months ago

Solena D.Happy belated birthday, dear J!!!

I am happy you had a great day and I wish you a fabulous year ahead, filled with love, laughter, travels and coffee and cake, of course!

Also, I still hope we’ll see each other soon, right? :D

I applaud you loudly for doing this, because I know it couldn’t have been easy. Your proactive approach is something I admire and need to learn for myself.

Solena D.Eating

How much thought do you put into your food?
A lot, and I try to educate myself, but often feel the same way you do. Every day it’s a different advice on what is healthy and necessary, and what will kill you by, I don’t know, this Saturday. I try to use my common sense and follow the advice that I read recently: don’t buy/eat anything your own grandma wouldn’t have in her pantry.

Do you grow any of your own?
Yes, I grow a big vegetable garden and my own herbs. Mind you, this year wasn’t a big success due to the terrible drought, but we did manage something and we made our own pickles, salsa and ajvar (a kind of chutney, made from eggplants and red peppers) for winter. We also make our own jams and cordials and store dry plants (leaves, flowers) for tea.

Do you make conscious food choices based on overall nutrition?
Yes, I try to eat a balanced diet as much as I can. I cook from scratch, so I know what I’m eating.

Or, do you just eat things you like eating, and don’t worry about it?
I’m lucky enough I like to eat the things that I eat. I rarely crave something that is bad for me. I can go into a supermarket starving and come out with only the things I intended to buy. However, bread is my big, big weakness.

What do you typically eat?
I don’t eat red meat or poultry. I eat a lot of fruit and veggies, and a lot of fish. I live by the sea so the fish I eat had been caught a few hours before it reached my table, I don’t eat frozen or canned much (unless I made it), I eat free range eggs I buy from a family friend, I eat a lot of wild plants and mushrooms and so on.
Yesterday I had too much chocolate, though :)

Do you eat much junk food?
Almost none. I used to indulge in a bag of potato chips every now and then, but a few months ago I started having a strange reaction: my gums get inflamed and sore when I eat them, so I just don’t any more.

What effect have you noticed your choices having on your weight/health?
Eating well increases my energy level, manages my digestion and helps me feel clear and focused mentally. When I eat processed food I feel heavy and drowsy and tired. Also important for me since I struggle with depression. All the food-related outdoor activities I mentioned are also very good for me.

Have you thought about making any changes?
I believe I’m on the right track, but there’s always room for improvement. 7 months ago

Solena D.Thursday, September 6th

It has been tough few days in Solenaland. I feel really tired and overwhelmed, and the desire to lie down and pull the covers over my face is growing and growing. But I will resist and keep myself busy.

Work
concentrate and be polite; leave it in the office when I close the door

In betweens
buy cucumbers and eggs and grapes
drink a lot of water

Home
do a lot of cleaning. I can’t stand mess and clutter when I’m upset. Kitchen, laundry, floor washing-all done.
write to people
pamper myself in some way
go to sleep earlier (than 12 midnight)8 months ago

Solena D.Ah, Italy!

If you are looking for a good and funny read on travelling around Italy, do read Peter Moore’s Vroom with a view.
I loved it!

Ah, Italy! My 5 days in Tuscany this summer still warm my heart and I still have photos to post…8 months ago

Solena D.Panem et circenses

The world that we live in is not a happy place. So much injustice, so much inequality and so much hunger everywhere I look. In my opinion the funds could have and should have been directed elsewhere. Also, I’ve read that London (and this was the case with some other Olympics hosts, as well) didn’t cash in from tourism nearly as much as they had hoped to, so I believe the funds were wasted, rather than invested.

During the Olympics we are force-fed the notion that everyone joins in and entire world celebrates and everyone this and everyone that.
I, for one, do not subscribe to this, because the Olympics are surely not an opportunity to rejoice and be merry for the sex workers being trafficked (being subject to threats, beatings, gangbanging…) to meet the needs of games goers.
Or for the Bangladeshi sweatshop workers who produce sportswear and equipment for major brands for less than minimum wage in unspeakably horrific conditions (to name just 2 examples).

So, no, I didn’t celebrate, and I don’t believe I will until truly everyone has the opportunity to join me.
My 2 cents. 9 months ago

Solena D.Ha!

How nice when things align like this. If you go to Italy you must see Tuscany. It’s beautiful beyond words, it’s romantic, it’s surprising and it has the best food ever. Wait, maybe you’ve been already?

Oh yes, me too! We’ll keep in touch!10 months ago

Solena D.Kudos

yes, you may have not changed the world last week, but you did well.
Considering the circumstances, I’d give you an Olympic medal right now if I could.

Hugs! 10 months ago

Solena D.I hear you

I ended my work day today in tears – not sadness tears, but angry, frustrated tears.
People can be incredibly stupid and insensitive.

Here’s wishing us both a better day tomorrow! 10 months ago
