That in most jurisdictions, it’s up to the police what determines a safe speed to be driving in specific conditions. While, no, you won’t get a speeding ticket for doing 50 around a 35 MPH recommended corner, if you happen to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane because of that speed, even if there isn’t any traffic coming at the time, a police officer can pull you over and ticket you for unsafe or reckless driving. They don’t usually put up those recommendations for no reason whatsoever, and a fair number of those crosses and flowers that you see along the highways all over the US are very near curves where people chose not to follow those recommendations.

Not trying to be any kind of killjoy, but it’s just something to think about…

Today, I made Honey Oatmeal Cookies. My girlfriend is out visiting a friend this evening, and that friend requested cookies, preferably oatmeal. The GF says that whenever she makes them they usually turn out like little bricks, so I told her I’d give it a try. The description for this recipe says they come out, “Soft and flaky. Good tasting.” I would say that’s fairly accurate. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough honey, but I improvised, using maple syrup (the real stuff) and a little brown sugar to make up the difference.

General results: Not bad, even though oatmeal cookies aren’t exactly on the top of my list of favorites…

I found during my last job search that most places, if they didn’t want you for the job, they never got back to you at all. I’m one of those people who isn’t all that pushy, and I don’t like calling every place where I’ve sent a resume. It seems pushy to me, I guess. But that’s what I wound up having to do was call every place where I sent one about a week or two afterward. I guess in this economy, that’s part of how the prospective employers differentiate between the people who “really want the job” and those who are just floating their resume out there to see if anyone bites…

to boot up to either Linux or Windows, but there were some issues with drivers on my laptop (a Dell Studio 17), and I never was able to get it to recognize my WiFi. For that and various other reasons, I purged the entire drive and started over as a dual boot WinXP and Win7 system. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to move back over to Linux soon, though…

I’m sure you’ll track down a decent internship. I know that most companies seem to like having interns, because they get good work out of them at a bargain-basement price, and if you work out well, all the better. If you don’t, once they internship is done, you just go on your merry way and they don’t get a ding on their unemployment insurance rates.

I hope something really good comes along for you, though. And never worry about not knowing the answer when they ask you something: As long as you’re willing to try to find the answer, most employers are more than happy.

I can kind of understand why they wouldn’t allow you to hold both positions at the same time. That kind of thing always seems to become sort of a hassle, especially if you wind up having two different bosses or departments you’re working for. But I’m sure something will open up for you. My mom and I cried when we had to put her Boston terrier down years ago. She said that maybe we just weren’t meant to have pets, if we were going to cry every time we lost one. I told her that if you couldn’t get so attached that you cried over them, then you weren’t meant to have pets.

found myself doing things like just getting up and taking a little walk during commercial breaks if you’re watching TV, or things like that. Just doing one or two little laps around the living room would add 50 or so steps to my count, and if I did that five or six times during an evening of TV watching, it would bump up my total by a few hundred.

And therefore a good time to try to get a new start on some of the things that I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I think I’ve actually been doing this goal pretty much straight for the past year, but I’ve just been slack on updating it much of the time. But I figure I want to definitely get out and do something each weekend and have updates on it for all of 2012 before I mark it as complete. So, without further ado…

Yesterday, the girlfriend and I went down to Lewisville to a friend’s house for a New Year’s Eve party. It was a pretty fun get-together, about a dozen or so people.

Then today, we took the dog down to Petsmart to get a couple of things and then over to the dog park for an hour or so. So, one weekend so far this year, one weekend getting out into the world and doing some stuff…

Oh, and the picture is of Ernie, our corgi, all harnessed up and ready to head out to the car…

I’ll try to get a picture. Frankly, I doubt they’re worth shipping halfway across the country. I was planning to sell the pair for something like $40, but I’m guessing they’d probably be something like $100 or more to ship. If you or your friend did want them, I’d pretty much just charge whatever UPS charged me to get them there.

I was thinking that you could probably find something compatible cheaper on eBay or Craigslist, but I just took a look and most of the old scopes on eBay are going for over a hundred bucks each. So maybe it would be worth shipping them. In any case, I’ll plug ‘em in and see if I can take a picture or two…

Right now is good!

I never did hear back from that guy, and after Christmas, I’m going to go ahead and post my own ad to sell the unit. I have several other things that might make me a little money but which are currently just taking up space, so I may try to list one or two things a week until they’re gone.

As for being careful, I’m probably a little less so than a lot of folks are. I tend to be sort of a trusting person, and I’m also 6’2” and a touch over 200 pounds, so I’m not easily intimidated. Nonetheless, I’m not stupid, so, yes, I do generally meet people at a neutral spot or my house.

As for “policy,” I guess I’m pretty flexible. I’ve had some people where I’ve met them halfway, and in a few cases where someone has pleaded hardship, not having a car, having to take care of a child, or what have you, and I’ve gone ahead and brought the item to them. I’m a big softie sometimes. But I definitely go with cash or trade only. No checks, no IOUs…

but I’ve got another one going now. I was up to nearly half a year when I screwed up and forgot to write for a day. Now I’ve got another streak of about a month and a half going, and I try to make it a habit to write every morning first thing when I get up. We’ll see if I can make it to the end of October next year, though…
