I am surprised that Dragon NaturallySpeaking is so bad. It can keep going for a little while, but it always loses it after a bit of dictation. For instance, today after about 40 minutes of dictation it stopped without warning due to lack of memory or something. WTF? I have 6-8 GB of memory and a basically empty 1 TB hard drive. How does anything run out of memory?

So far research in machine learning (for me anyway) is really writing utility programs for text file processing. :-/ 4 months ago

I know what stemming is, it is making a computer recognize that ‘burp’, ‘burping’, and ‘burped’ are all really the same word ‘burp-’. But what the heck is lemmatization? (Off to Wikipedia!) :-)
So today I am spending the day learning about ways to make computers recognize that ‘sexy’ and ‘sexiness’ are the same concept (but ‘sex’ is not, so there may be a problem there!). That is my afternoon. Doing stuff like that. And python.

I have started doing some training in machine learning and need to pick some projects/areas to study directly. I can make some packages do some processes but I really need to hand-code some examples to feel more comfortable. So that is a goal for the next couple of weeks.
For now I am getting a standard package to work and using it on some new data sets…but it is some kind of progress. :-) 4 months ago

I need to rethink this goal a little to get it back on track! 4 months ago

So back to python after a > 3 year gap. I am using it to process directories of text files into formats usable for text mining. It is fun when it works. ;-) 4 months ago

So I added the feature here at 43 Things that posts my entries here at my blog (barely used these days) to see if that makes me “blog more.” Let’s see if that works… 5 months ago

So while I was working this past fall, I basically dropped the ball on this. Will try to start again today and see if I can get back to the diligence that I had originally! 5 months ago

Thanks for creating this goal! :-) 5 months ago
I’ve always thought of it as fun, I was just happy to be able to add another completed goal to my list! Not that it is the sort of thing that can be completed. Heck we just added some more to it this last weekend!
But it does beg the question: why is it that the Germans and Japanese companies make the best quality stuff? While the Americans and Canadians make stuff that is just not as well designed? I blame the Puritans! :-) 5 months ago
Among certain people involved in such (magical/mystical) work, there is a belief that a complete and precise log of activities, effects, synchronicities, etc. is essential for development. The idea is to keep from allowing the flights of fancy of the mind to interfere with spiritual development.
I actually use the term slightly differently, more idiosyncratically, but mean something similar: I keep it as a log of interesting dreams, strange phenomena, synchronistic events, and the like. I’m not practicing any form of magic, per se. But it is nice to have a record of the bizarre and inexplicable events that occur in one’s life. :-) 5 months ago
I can relate. That is how I got to the point of regularly posting at Tumblr. Scheduling is the key, for me anyway! I can spend a hour or so once a week working out entries, but I really need a system for spacing the posts out to make it work. 5 months ago
The trick is to decouple punishment from failure. I hope I managed to do that for my students, but sometimes the world won’t let it work that way. For instance, I routinely spent three hours working on a lecture that failed. Then I had to find another three hours to try again; failure was punishment. At its worst it pushed me to do the same old thing in the same old way; very hard to fight that force and momentum.

This seems to me to be a quest for fate and happenstance. What to do, what to do? What actions can one take to make this happen? 5 months ago

My life is too much in flux to commit to buying a house. So I’ve stopped looking. Will have to do this again when I move to a new city, which I hope is very soon. 5 months ago

Did it. Actually got the job. Turned it down. By the time I got it, I realized that it was not the right job for me. Wrong department, wrong classes to teach, wrong everything. Also, teaching at the university level is not a transferable job skill. That should not be the case, but it is.
Decided to do a research gig for the next 6 months or more instead.
Hope I made the right decision. At the moment I am really not sure. 5 months ago

Finally finished teaching my statistics classes for the semester. Learned a ton of R myself and a few things about bootstrapping and randomization testing/permutation testing. Need to find a way to consolidate my knowledge or it’ll all be gone next week. 5 months ago

Kinda got screwed by the guy helping me so far. Well, not helping. That is the screwed part. But it turns out other souls are working on my behalf. Met a dean today. Something may come of it. Or not. But still happy to meet more people. 7 months ago
