You could tell him that you’re not as touchy-feely a person as he is, and that when he makes these innocent gestures it feels as though there’s something behind that, which is why you asked the questions which seem to have offended him. (Even if you don’t think they offended them, if you couch it that way it makes it clear why you brought it up).

It’s possible that he doesn’t want to want a relationship with you, and that he’s feeling guilty about the sense of hunger you picked up on.
