Well, I’m marking this as done. The african music project was just a pipe dream, unfortunately. I have however launched a gypsy jazz outfit, as a founder member. We are Django’s Tiger. You can find us here:

Well, I’m marking this one done. I’ve been attending gigs with a gypsy jazz band Parisian Swing for a few months now, and sight-reading new material from chord charts. And I’m launching a gypsy jazz band of my very own, Django’s Tiger. Very happy about this. A great deal of hard work under the bridge, but extremely rewarding, musically.
