Wise Men
by Stuart Nadler

I really enjoyed this book. I’m not sure what it was about it, but every time I picked it up, I had a hard time putting it back down. He has a book of short stories that I hear is even better and I’m going to request it from the library. 2 weeks ago

Wundergrl21&$@!

I’ve been encountering nothing but inconsiderate people lately. Just one after another after another. Don’t people think about others any more? Don’t people admit their wrongs anymore? Don’t people apologize anymore? Do people think that my time doesn’t matter at all?

Wundergrl21sequential screening

The nurse called this morning and said that the results of my sequential screen were normal. I go back in on May 9th for another blood draw, but I’m hopeful that will come back normal too.

We saw the doctor on the 23rd and got to listen to our baby’s heartbeat. The doctor said it was still early, so it might take him a minute to find the heartbeat, but he found it right away. He told me that the baby’s weight at birth is based on what I weighed at birth (6lbs 4oz) and the week that the baby is born. That means that K’s birth weight of 5lbs 15oz at 38 1/3 weeks was completely normal and on track with what they would expect. He said with the 2nd baby they expect about a half pound increase, but not much more than that. (I was the 2nd baby for my mom and her first was 5lbs 14oz.) So this little one will most likely be around 6 1/2 lbs. Completely manageable.

He kept saying that with healthy women like me they don’t expect any complications, but then at the end of the appointment, after calling me healthy about ten times, he said I was so dehydrated they couldn’t even test my urine. I said ‘oh, he saved the best for last’. I’ve never been much of a water drinker, always getting the water I need from food. He said normally it’s true that you don’t need to drink water and can get all you need from food, but not when you’re pregnant. So I’ve been tasked with drinking more water and I’m trying, but it’s still not quite a daily thing. When we eat out I’ll just have water and I’ve been trying to drink cucumber and lemon water at home. My goal is to drink at least one glass a day to get me in the habit and then bump it up from there.

The doctor also told me that I could stop taking my pill cocktail for nausea and vomiting and to start taking a prenatal vitamin and vitamin D. I know from experience that I can’t take the prenatal if I’m still sick, so I stopped the sickness pills first to make sure I was feeling better. The first day I threw up in the morning and felt nauseous most of the day. The second day I threw up everything I ate all day. I restarted the pills and I’ll try to go without them again on Friday when J is home all day. 2 weeks ago

Wundergrl214/19/13: Portland Aquarium

We were hesitant about visiting the Portland Aquarium, because the co-owner, who also owns the Boise Aquarium, was arrested in Florida for buying marine life illegally. We needed something to cheer K up, though, because she was supposed to go to the jungle gym with a friend and they canceled because they were sick (and haven’t rescheduled). She had been looking forward to it all week and was really bummed out when it didn’t happen. We took her to Chinese food for lunch, which was really good, and then drove to Milwaukie to give the aquarium a try.

It ended up being a great experience. K got to pet and feed sharks and rays. One of the rays that she gave food kept lingering and jumping out of the water at her, giving her a chance to really pet it. She also fed tropical fish, felt around in a couple of touch tanks, saw a Morey eel, an octopus with all of its legs stretched out and a couple of giant lobsters. They have lorikeets, but we didn’t pay to feed them, because it’s cheaper at the zoo. They’ll have puffins and otters soon, but their enclosures aren’t finished yet. There’s a little jungle gym there too, but it wasn’t fun for K.

We thought about purchasing the family membership, which would be the cost of three trips, but we figured we’d only go two or three times a year anyway and the baby will be free for the first couple of years, so it wasn’t worth the upfront cost. 2 weeks ago

Wundergrl21extremely important

Right now I only pay on my Sallie Mae student loans, but in about a month I’ll have to start paying on my Department of Education student loans as well and that will more than double my monthly payment. I qualify for income contingent and income based repayment, which would make my monthly payment $0 for at least a year. I need to apply for these before my DoE loans come due, but we’re out of printer ink and I need to print off five densely worded pages for each. I didn’t know until today that my payment would be 0 with these payment plans and now that I know the fire is lit under me to go out and buy printer ink asap. I can apply to pay J’s loans combined with mine under the same plans – this will be a huge savings for us and will relieve a lot of the stress we’ve been under lately. 3 weeks ago

Wundergrl21Yes...

Should be in about 8 weeks.

We’re amazed by the number of parents we know that have already asked us if we know if it’s a boy or a girl. Including a friend of ours that is a father of four. Four little ones. Is there some magic way to find out in the first trimester that they’re not telling us? :P 4 weeks ago

Wundergrl212nd ultrasound

Baby 2 is about a quarter of an inch longer than K was at 12 weeks and was visibly bigger overall. That, combined with the nausea and vomiting not being as bad this time around, has me thinking our little one may be a boy. That’s what we’re hoping at least. :) 4 weeks ago

-date night for $10 ♥ 4 weeks ago

1. that K went with me to Sunday School

2. that we had lunch with FIL and his friends D & M

3. that M and I talked a lot about education during lunch, she recently retired and was my niece’s kindergarten teacher five years ago

4. for the supremely nice people at bingo: a very nice lady sitting at the same table as me and one of the kindest guys I’ve ever met sitting at the table behind me, he bought me three blackouts, offered me his fries and told me he hopes I have a beautiful, healthy baby if he doesn’t see me again

5. that I happened to have a thank you card on me and I gave it to the kind guy, he was really touched and said he has daughters that are too cool to play bingo with their dad, it made me wish I could afford to play bingo with him all the time

6. that during bingo I got to watch UConn beat Notre Dame in the NCAA women’s basketball semi finals, I kept thinking ‘I could see K doing that when she’s older’ 1 month ago

Wundergrl21Does

he know that? :)

K would love to meet him, but I don’t know in what situation that would ever be possible.

Oh, maybe I read that wrong. I thought you were saying the president is your second cousin once removed, but maybe you meant you played b-ball with his second cousin once removed.1 month ago

Wundergrl21orientation

Kindergarten orientation is April 11th and I think we register that night. I’m so nervous about it – to the point that I think I may have an anxiety attack. I have a lot of reservations about the school. K says if I let her go to kindergarten she’ll let me homeschool her for 1st grade. I hope our situation allows for that. I’m so unsure about the school she’ll be going to. I hope the orientation settles some of my fears. 1 month ago

Wundergrl21Traveling Soldiers

At night, along with her bedtime story, K likes me to sing her a song before she falls asleep. She always requests “Traveling Soldiers”, which is really Travelin’ Soldier by the Dixie Chicks.

Sometimes after she falls asleep I go into her room and lay with her, brush the hair out of her face, kiss her on the forehead. I know that one day too soon she won’t let me lay with her anymore. Even sooner than that the baby will come and will take up a lot of the attention that would normally go to K. I worry about how that will affect her. Her world is going to change so much then.

Last night we used the grill for the first time of the year. She stood by the back door and watched the flames as they lit up the briquettes. I promised her that in a week or two we’ll buy jumbo marshmallows and roast them over the grill. That will be a first for her. It will be good preparation for her first camping trip in a few months. 1 month ago

Wundergrl21Still 8 weeks...

I wasn’t expecting two, but my mom is a fraternal twin and my grams was 30 when she had them. I really don’t want twins! I did when I was pregnant with K, but after she was born I realized one baby at a time is just fine. :) 1 month ago
