Although I didn’t train as well for the race as I had originally planned, I finished in 3:01:24—about 5 minutes faster than my last half marathon. It was a nice course, just a few miles up the road from where I live. Also, a great vibe to be participating in an all-women’s race!

We spent 6 days here and visited Kilkenny, Blarney, Killarney, Ring of Kerry and Dublin. We were actually in Dublin for St. Patrick’s Day, which was a once in a lifetime experience. I am definitely glad we pinched our pennies for a year to make this trip a reality.

is a nice 3-4 miles hike at the Lake Mead area. I also really like the Bristlecone Trail at Mt. Charleston during the summer. Although the trail is at about 9,000’ elevation, it is relatively flat compared to some of the other trails at Mt. Charleston. Enjoy all the hiking/walking down there!

I did a Turkey Trot trail run here on Thanksgiving morning, and I am going to count this as a hike since my sister and I walked it with her dog. It was a beautiful setting with wooded trails and creeks.

Trip has been fully paid for!!!

We have had a rough year fincially, but this week-long trip to Ireland next March was only going to cost us about $1,400 a piece including airfare, hotel, some meals and some sightseeing. I couldn’t pass up such a great deal, since I have been wanting to go to Ireland for quite some time.

Started writing a memoir

about my experiences living on 4 different continents while in my 20s. Although I am not yet sure I will try to publish this, I feel it’s a story I need to write.

I started on Friday, and so far I’ve written about 2,000 words. Since a standard book these days is around 100,000 words, I am about 1/50 done. Woohooo!

I am also thinking of including recipes at the end of each chapter, from each of the places I’ve lived. Lately I have enjoyed reading memoirs that include recipes, so why not try this for my book as well?

Because the Hippie Chick Half is a local race in my community, and because it is organized by a local running store/racing company.

It is a similar concept to the Nike Women’s Half and Full Marathon—an all-women’s race, a necklace for finishers, a mimosa garden at the finish. But it is a much smaller field, I wouldn’t need to travel far to complete the race, and I would feel much better about supporting a local business (although technically Nike World Headquarters are just up the street from me).

I haven’t decided yet whether I want to run the half or the quarter marathon, but if I register by Dec. 31st I can save $10 on my registration

when I tried zip-lining. At first I was self-conscious about chickening out, but then I thought, “I’ve done a lot of cool things that not many other people have done. So what if adventure sports isn’t my thing.”

My point being: don’t beat yourself up over this. Look at what else you’ve accomplished this year and relish in your triumphs.

So glad I altered this goal...

I’ve recently transferred to a new dojo, having moving out of state, but before I left my old dojo I took my 5th kyu test and passed. Fortunately, my new dojo accepted my old rank and I am 5 tests away from achieving shodan (black belt). Only 4-5 more years of hard training until this goal will be accomplished.

Our home was robbed in June, so unfortunately we were no longer able to afford this trip. I hope to find another opportunity to improve my Spanish language skills in the future!

My husband and I are thinking of enrolling in a 5-week language & cultural immersion in Guadalajara this summer. A former colleague of mine retired there and operates the program, so I already have a collection. My Spanish from grad school/past travel is mediocre, and I’m about due for a personal sabbatical.

I’m 0/3 on applications I submitted for Fall 2012 admissions. Surprisingly I don’t feel that bad about it. Today I was reading an article about how unemployment in recent college grads is over 50%, and anthropology was cited as the #2 most unemployed major. At least I finished my BA & MA before the recession hit and have a semi-decent career at the moment. But the high unemployment rate definitely made for a surge of grad school applicants this year and some pretty stiff competition.

If you move to Vegas you should check out my dojo. They have a 2 week orientation class, so you don’t have to jump into the regular classes right away. It makes it a lot less intimidating.

Over the weekend, I passed my 6th kyu (green belt test). Now I’m officially considered an intermediate belt, which is a bit daunting. Two weekends ago I also competed in my second karate tournament and placed third in my division in kumite. I am so glad I have added karate to my life!
