This is a lot of fun. This past week we have been testing some advertising and analyzing the results using Google Analytics. Last night I was able to watch visitors arrive at our Beta web site, poke around and leave, identifying them by city. They come from all over the U.S. and Canada. It was midnight on the West coast, so I can only wonder who was logging on at 3am Monday morning from the East coast. There’s still a lot to do to get us business-ready. We’ll learn as we go. Decided to postpone formal incorporation till September. In another month, the Beta site will be fully operational and we can switch gears into launch mode. 10 months ago

since I went on a bonafide road trip. The last couple were to central Texas in 2006 and San Francisco in 2005. This time it’s up to Mammoth Lakes, CA for a regional meeting and to pick up a load of snowshoes (of all things) to bring back to a local outings group for kids. We are renting a RAV4 – all expenses paid courtesy of the Sierra Club. One stop on the return journey will be at the Goldwell Open Air Museum and the ghost town of Rhyolite. It’s not a long trip really, just 11~12 hours of driving, but three of us will be gone three days and it should be a lot of fun. 10 months ago

of a lady I knew in Tokyo way back when. In her 50s, she too was Jewish, but far removed from any practice or real knowledge of Judaism. One day she was walking along a street she had never been down before and came across a building called the Jewish Community Center. On a whim, she went in. This made me think of the only published novel by Oscar Wilde, “A Portrait of Dorian Grey.” Staying young has its price, perhaps a high one. I admire your attitude. Seems like I have spent every free moment in the past month working on this, including some moments I didn’t even know were free (pulled an all nighter last week; it’s been years since I last did that). We’ve hired three people on contract, spent a few hundred dollars on technology, and got our core web site about 80% ready for beta testing, which we’re hoping will begin on July 4th … so soon! We’re aiming at having everything fully operational in mid-September to take advantage of certain “opportune events” expected to occur toward the end of this year or early next. It’s certainly an adventure. I just hope the destination turns out to be as much fun as the journey. 11 months ago

I was doing really well walking. Two years ago I got rid of my car to walk, bus or bike everywhere. Early this year, however, I tore my ACL, was on crutches for two weeks and used a cane for four months. I still walk, but not nearly what I was doing back when I got my pedometer. how sweet this is. We were part of a progressive coalition, and it took more than a little courage for Spearman and all us to take on the machine. Now it’s made headlines in LGBT and African American circles, I know, and among environmentalists, it’s a huge step toward saving Lake Tahoe and other areas from rampant development. The best part is she faces no real competition in November, so we can now turn our attention to putting another strong woman in place of a clueless incumbent: Shelley Berkley for Senate. 11 months ago

My Sierra Club group took a stand in one of our local elections, aiming to oust an incumbent with a poor environmental voting record, as well as a bad history on social issues. We joined with other progressive groups to defeat him in the primary, against strong odds. He had the big money, the backing of high-ranking party leaders and a sense of entitlement. We had grassroots phonebanks, door knocks and small donation fundraising. The results are in. For a change, the underdog has proven triumphant. Nevada will have its first black lesbian military veteran pastor in the State Senate. 11 months ago

the most difficult book in the English language, but also one of the most important and influential, so it is well worth reading. I would recommend that you go as far as you can, but if it just becomes overwhelmingly difficult, put it down and come back to it in a few years. Almost nobody I know can afford to retire in this economy … I had to use my 401k during a period of unemployment, and although Social Security will help, it won’t be enough to live on. Much as I enjoy working for my clients, I still enjoy working for myself more. The idea is to have a stream of passive income that doesn’t involve some multimarketing scheme or any form of inventory. For the past dozen years or so, my buddy pH & I have talked about making $$$ on the Internet so that we could enjoy hedonistic lifestyles well into our Golden Years. We both live in resort towns. We both built our careers on marketing. We both have strong connections to Asia. We also have strong aversions to hard work or anything smacking of maintenance. We considered and rejected the idea of doing anything illegal or immoral.

Then late last year, something happened. A certain law changed. I didn’t think much of it, at first, but a couple of months ago I had a flash of inspiration and realized how that legal change created an opportunity. I saw clearly that pH & I were perfectly positioned to take advantage of it, if we got up off our bums and did a bit of planning.

Well, happy to announce that the basic business plan is now done. Domain names for more than a dozen web sites have been reserved. Basic research has been completed, content development has been contracted and graphic design is in the offing. We’ll most likely incorporate (in Nevada, of course) in July. I have not been so excited about a project in the past four years. With a little elbow grease, the right timing and some good fortune, this could be the ticket to true retirement.

I’d still be two steps from the starting line. I got the photos taken … way back in March. Where did the last three months go? I’ve got the application. I’ve even got the cash. All I need to do is fill out the form and take it down to the Post Office, which is extremely inconvenient since the nearest one doesn’t do passports anymore. is not something you need, it is something your children have a right to. It’s for them. Make him man up. Go back to court if you have to. Nowadays the law takes a very dim view of deadbeat dads. If he doesn’t pay, they will garnish his wages. It’s about your kids, not him. IMHO, they deserve better. 11 months ago
