Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

I have applied to two jobs.

And have also emailed two people (complete strangers who just happen to be doing what I want to be doing [yes I suppose I am stalking]) and asked if they have any career advice for me. 2 years ago

whispersinddarkEntry 5 ("All that I'm after is a life full of laughter")

So the 20 person challenge is proving to be a good deal harder than first expected.. thus far I’m averaging 3 people a day (BTW when I say human interaction.. I don’t mean a simple hello/how are you?/how was your weekend? [also do any of you notice how it’s become the norm to ask those questions and then walk away without even waiting for a response?].. I mean a genuine out of the box conversation where you learn a little something new/find something in common with another human being) so I’m going to have to up the ante… cause 3 is seriously falling short..

The real reason that I felt the need to write an entry though is cause yesterday I was reading this article on the habits of millionaires.. and it occured to me that both habit #1 and habit #2 apply to any goal.. including this one..

habit #1: Firmly believe that it is possible/will happen for you
habit #2: Eliminate all negative thinking.. including any thoughts that run counter to the belief that it is possible for you..

so that’s my new resolution.. police my thoughts more effectively.. I mean I often find myself thinking defeatest thoughts like “all the good ones are taken..” etc. etc. and thoughts like that are 1) not true and 2) blind you to the truth.. eg. in retrospect I can truly appreciate how genuine, kind, warm and funny the last guy I dated was.. but at the time I couldn’t really see that… and so I engaged in self sabotage..

anyway lesson learned.. 2 years ago

So statistically, since the last entry: I’ve applied to five additional jobs; signed up to two newsletters for professional associations.

I’m moving a good deal slower on the job front than I would like.. but part of the problem with that is that I still haven’t figured out what I want to do with my life.. I have a list of the things that are important to me in a job..

1. To see rewards for the work that I perform, these rewards should be monetary as well as in the form of benefits that say that my company values me and wants to reward and keep me..
2. It should pay enough money so that I can afford to start a family.
3. It should also have flexible enough hours/vacation days/personal days so that I can have a life outside of work and free weekends to do with as I see fit/raise a family
4. I should have a supportive work environment where everyone builds off an enthusiastic atmosphere
5. I want to be intellectually stimulated in a way that encourages me to learn more
6. I want to be given freedom to work on my own in a way that says that my boss has complete faith in the work that I do and that I can get stuff done
7. I want the kind of job that requires me to wear business casual to work, and actually look good on a daily basis
8. the job should require creativity, in a way that makes it non repetitive
9. I want job security, the kind of job where I’m glad that I invested the time and effort in learning and improving myself in regards to it..
10. to have a mentor that encourages my growth

But aside from that I don’t really have any clear direction.. the only thing that I know.. KNOW at this point is that I want a science related job that is OUTSIDE of a laboratory.. 2 years ago

So I’m sorta shy/a homebody/a bookworm… and the combined effect definitely makes me come off as somewhat unapproachable… so I’ve decided to undertake the ‘20 person interaction’ challenge.. where basically I have to interact with 20 people a day… and the goal isn’t necessarily to get them to ask you out or anything.. it’s just to get you to stretch beyond your boundaries.. and to become more interactive… and more social… 2 years ago

i would actually strongly recommend you go to a beginners yoga class… because it’s just way safer to have an instructor that can spot if you’re doing something wrong..

it’s a really worthy goal.. yoga is one of those things… the first week is the hardest.. and you just have to learn to be kind and forgive yourself… and eventually you get so good that you don’t even realize the progress that you made until someone new comes into the class and you remember there was a time when you used to struggle with postures too..

but yeah it’s a good goal.. yoga makes all the aches and pains of the day just disappear..

good luck.. 2 years ago

I haven’t read all of it.. in my youth I read the first five books and I found that it raised more questions for me than it answered… plus there were parts in it that I found disturbing.. so I stopped.. 2 years ago

I applied to two jobs today..

one was a publishing job and the other is fairly similar to what I’m doing right now, with the exception that it’s in San Diego. 2 years ago
