I’m wrapping up my third class (had the last class meeting and now just need to finish my course work) and will enjoy a month-long break before my fourth class begins.
It’s interesting how the subject material in these courses really builds from one to the next.
At this point I have several tests I need to take and am thinking it best not to “rush” into the upcoming school year. I am grateful right now that I have a job and have the option at this point to take my time. We’ll see how much I can get done in time and whether it all works for me to start this school year or later. Should be interesting!

June check-in
Well, I never expected a year ago (even 6 months ago) that I’d be where I am! I’m really enjoying the classes in my certification program and am learning TONS. I finish my second class this week and start my third on Saturday. Including field experience, at the pace I’m going I’ll complete this program by the end of November, which is amazing. I started in April. I’m hoping to find a teaching job for the upcoming school year (starting in August). We’ll see.
A few weeks ago I taught a kindergarten class as a volunteer (the teacher remained in the room while I taught) and really enjoyed working with the students. They were so smart and (of course) adorable. It confirmed that’s the grade level I’d like to teach.
It feels like things are moving fast in some ways, which is a little nerve racking and scary, but exciting, too. One step at a time. It’ll all work out. :)

Pondering...
As I continue my certification classes, I think I’d like to teach kindergarten or first grade.
On another note, I’m both a little nervous and a little excited about the prospects of leaving the “corporate world” behind. Teaching is a job that I think I will find fulfilling. Waking up in the morning to a job where I feel like I’m truly making a difference in the lives of others – I can’t think of a better goal. It’s part manager, part actor, part coach, part researcher…it’s a job that incorporates so much variety into each day. Plus, I believe there are students out there who really need me.

I’m realizing 8 years after college graduation (ironically from university with a fantastic teaching program – obviously not the reason I attended) that I now want to be a teacher. Who knew? It’s amazing where life can lead.
Since I have my Bachelor’s in an area that’s not education related, I was able to find a program locally that will help prepare me for my teaching certification. I’m already enrolled and will begin classes in April! I’m so excited!
