funniculee is dredging up old memories of past literary loves
You may have be familiar with resources like “Spanish for the Health Care Field” (to help doctors and nurses serve Spanish-speaking patients better). Well – I want to create a set of electronic flashcards (and maybe other resources) on “Spanish for the Library Field”. There are a few vocab lists out there (like this great and comprehensive one) but no library-specific phrase books or resources for actual practice (that I’ve found so far).
To that end, I am brainstorming a bunch of common phrases/sample interactions that librarians in public services might use frequently in working with the public. I’m talking the daily grind sort of stuff; obviously for more complicated reference questions, different vocabulary would be necessary.
I can think of a lot of ideas on my own (i.e. the bathrooms are over there, do you have a library card? etc.), but seeing as I don’t yet have a lot of front lines experience, I thought I would try putting it out there to the rest of you. I’m interested in common interactions with patrons of all ages, preferably those that are less obvious but common all the same.
Thanks!
ETA: in case anyone without any Spanish background wants a resource for REALLY basic library-speak, there’s also this pamphlet from the DuPage Library System.

I read a lot and post reviews on Amazon. I answer questions on Yahoo Answers. I write how-to articles for eHow.com.
I’m having fun in retirement, so guess I’m doing OK. I also golf, travel, and have taken up photography and writing.

since I no longer reside in Library Land I am officially taking this goal off my list but I will always be a Librarian at heart.
I’m still involved with the Library at the school and am in charge of the lunch room reading table so books are never far away.
To all that have or desire a MLS, please remember the patrons,
the books will always have a home but with out the patrons there is no circulation and with out circulation there is no library, and the Library is a living functioning entity never forget that. (my former DUHrector did and is feeling the effects)

I’m finishing my last semester of my MLIS program and work as an academic librarian. I LOVE it! I would encourage anyone who is thinking about a library/information science program to go for it.

Thanks for the invite, especially since I’m in school, but not technically a librarian yet. I’ve got an assistantship researching digital libraries for an uncoming class though. Ultimately, I’m interested in going into either public or digital libraries. I like to work under a strong mission. I love program development and management.
The first thing I remember wanting to do career-wise was when I was a little gal and I used to play ‘library’ with my stuffed animals. I’d line them up with stacks of books and then put slips of paper into their items to ‘check them out’. So at the ripe ol’ age of 38, I’m getting closer to my childhood dream.
I am indeed a knitter and a Mama and extremely happy in both arenas. Thanks again and it’s lovely to meet y’all.
