The Different Things Sounds Great 9 hours ago

I used to teach school, so I know that we there are hundreds of ways to respond to a book. I like the idea of responding differently every book. But I also would like to see general discussions as we are reading, without spoilers.

Sounds like a plan! 13 hours ago

It’d be great to keep everybody on board especially since this is our first book! (Plus we got a late start, right??!)
I didn’t even start Good Omens until December so only just finished it.
I’m not sure how an online book club would work as far as discussion, but maybe we could each at least post a rating and mini-review (NO SPOILERS!) so we can keep track of things! Mine is below. I’m glad we’re not trying to read The Magus just yet because I need to get through Darwin’s The Voyage of the Beagle before I go to the Galapagos in 3 weeks….it’s kind of slow going.

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
3 1/2 stars (out of 5)
I loved this book when I started: how clever, witty, funny…I was laughing out loud at Subway. But then…a strange experience! I disliked the book more as I went along. That has never happened to me! Usually, if I’m ambivalent when I start, I get hooked quickly and LOVE it, or I love it consistently throughout. (In the case of hating it consistently..or boredom…it never gets finished.) But I felt the style got tiresome and I actually had a tough time finishing it. Weird, I know. So I only enjoyed it 3 stars, but felt it was a better book than that, so as a concession added another 1/2 star.

Anyone else?? We could always do something different each month….Like “Respond to the book in a photo.” Dunno. Something interesting and interactive.

Stay on Good Omens through December, switch to Magus in January? 15 hours ago

I haven’t read Good Omens either, but I hear its a quick read, Wasn’t into the first few pages of Magus, but now I can’t put it down. Limiting myself to 5 chapters a day. But I will switch books back. What does everyone else think?

Starting The Magus 1 day ago

Haven’t read a good novel in ages. Didn’t make it to the library in time for Good Omen, but will go back and read. How are others doing?

Sorry guys... 1 week ago

I don’t think I’ll be able to finish this book in time. I have loads of homework to do and finals to study for. I’m excited to get involved with the next book though.

Curious minds want to know 1 week ago

Has anyone read Good Omens? I am not finished with it, because I actually started reading it later than I had predicted. It is entertaining on so many levels, that I am sure to finish it soon.

I vote for The Magus next…

I received my copy 3 weeks ago

of Good Omens today, so I hope that is what we are reading(lol). It looks like reading this is doable by Dec 1. I’m open to start discussing up to chapter Saturday on Sunday, Nov 22. And continuing to Dec 1.

Any other ideas?

Have you picked a book yet.? 3 weeks ago

I hope it’s nots presumptuous for me to invite myself.I love to read, The Magus looks intriguing, so does Good Omens. For lack of time i vote for the shorter book, and The Magus for Dec. Happy reading. Let’s get started.

Let's get the ball rolling! 4 weeks ago

Since there’s six of us right now, everybody vote for the book to start. The first book to get 4 votes (or a plurality if we all 6 vote) is our book for November.

You can vote for one of these three:

The Magus by John Fowles
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman

or nominate and vote for another book from the BBC Big Read.

My vote is for Good Omens, since it makes good sense to start out with something quick and easy since we’re already 8 days into November!
