Wow… I’ve really abandoned this list. Bad bad. I’m reviving this for Thing-A-Day
The context has changed a lot; it’s been 2 years since I started this list. We’ve moved from the Netherlands to Italy, I finished graduate school, traveled a bit around Italy with the husband, started freelancing, my father had a life-saving operation (he’s fine now), took a big 7-week trip to India-Singapore-Indonesia with the husband. Although sometimes I wish some things were easier, I love our life!
71. being greeted by name in the local cafes/bakeries/fruit sellers/pizzeria in our Milan neighbourhood
72. touching a very soft hank of woolly yarn
73. swimming in Italian lakes in the summer
74. sunbathing in the park with the husband
75. staying over at a friend’s house and they prepare your bed for you while you brush your teeth: all crisp fresh sheets for you to sink into
76. looking at handsome Italian men on the metro/train :)
77. window-shopping in Milan
78. aperitivo with friends
79. receiving emails from people who have stumbled upon my blog/portfolio and want to get to know me for work/fun
80. receiving emails from online and offline publications who want to use my photography
Ugh. I will ignore the last entry I made under this goal and consider that a happy memory
53. frozen dinners
54. the ice cream that’s on the counter…melting…crap, i forgot I took it out
55.”Contagious” by the Isley Brothers. I don’t know why
56. Album: Till the Sun Turns Black by Ray LaMontagne
57. comfortable jeans
58. jeans that fit me properly
65. My ex-husband’s beer belly – I know this sounds a little on the petty and childish side, but he was always so proud of his fast metabolism and so critical of my weight. I guess it all finally caught up with him!
66. Real Mexican food – Taco Bell may have its good points, but there is nothing like real authentic Mexican food, especially chilaquiles. Yummy!
67. Improv comedy – The people that do this are so clever and funny. Love Whose Line is it Anyway, both the US and UK version. Tony Slattery is da bomb!
68. Poetry – Reading poetry is one of my great passions. I’ve dabbled in writing it myself for years. It’s hard for me to name a favorite poet, there are so many good ones. But here is my favorite poem ever.
When You are Old by William Butler Yeats
WHEN you are old and gray and full of sleep
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true;
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face.
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead,
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
69. Thunderstorms – Lightning flashes and thunder echoes across the sky. Mother Nature sure has a spectacular way of showing us who’s in charge. Sometimes it’s nice to feel small and insignificant.
54. Online friends – it’s always nice logging in and finding a comment from one of my online friends, or seeing a familiar name in chat and being greeted with virtual hugs and kisses. Sometimes its hard with the varied schedules and family obligations to keep in contact as much as I’d like with my offline friends, and even harder to find the opportunity to make new friends offline. But being part of this online world has certainly broadened my horizons, and I can say that I care for my online friends just as much as I do my offline ones.
55. Yahoo voice trivia – I love playing trivia games. I do play Trivial Pursuit and those sorts of games with my family and friends, but sometimes our schedules just don’t mesh. Besides, they don’t like it when I win. LOL
56. Weddings – To be more specific, I like to plan weddings. Maybe it’s a control-freak thing, but I like being in charge of everything, and I like to find creative ways to pull the whole thing off without breaking the budget too much. Which I guess makes it a good thing that I’m the one the family always turns to for help in planning the next wedding/birthday party/family reunion.
57. Auctions – I grew up going to auctions with my parents and grandmother on a weekly basis. Here in Illinois we’re about to enter Community Sale season, which for those of you not familiar with the idea, is basically a townwide auction. Everybody will bring their unwanted stuff downtown and line the streets, and then it is auctioned off to whomever wants it. It’s definitely a unique experience, that’s for sure. Definitely a place for bargain hunters.
58. Learning a new skill – Even being out of school as long as I have, I enjoy learning to do something new, it makes me feel self-reliant (or maybe it’s that control freak thing again…)
59. Splashing in puddles after a rainstorm – Although I must say, it does make the neighbors look at me like I’m crazy.
60. Yahoo answers – Finally, a practical use for all the useless junk filling my head!
61. Fox News Channel – I like their balanced approach to the issues, and I’m a huge O’Reilly fan.
62. The Chicken Dance – Ok, the thing about the chicken dance is that no matter what level of dancing ability you have, you accept the fact right away that if you are over ten years old and doing the chicken dance, you will look like a dork. Which keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously. So c’mon and dance with me!
63. Watching snow fall – It’s just sooo pretty.
64. Winnie the Pooh – silly old bear. Very comforting image, no matter how old you are.
It’s been so long since I’ve worked on this list. I do want to try to finish this, because I think it’s a worthwhile task. I’m going to take some time first to review what I’ve already come up with, and then push on toward the finish!
52. Watching the X-files with my best friend!
I’ve been a fan since… ‘96? ‘97? I have to admit I stopped watching when Duchovny left, but cna you really blame me? Anyhow, I came upon this little store in Pasadena that sells used DVDs and I found the collectors editions of the X-Files seasons (which were about 80 bucks a pop – and up- when they came out) for $20 a season. I bought Seasons 1 – 6, and season 8. Apprently someone had sold the store the whole series, and then someone came in and bought just seasons 7 and 9. So I am on a mission to get those two seaons in the collectors editions.
About two or 3 weeks ago at most, my friend, who has only seen a handful of episodes, and the movie, said he’d be interested in watching with me. So we started on season one and as of last night, we are more than halfway through season 4. That’s a lot of X-files! But man, this is probably one of my favorite TV shows ever, if not my all-time fave, so it’s been great sharing it with my best friend
89. Hearing my kids shout, “Thanks, Mom!” at the top of their voices.
90. Having my parents move out of my house.
91. Remembering that my husband will not die from his medical condition.
92. Planning an exit strategy to sell our business.
93. That my son LOVES going to school!
94. Having come to terms (this is HUGE).
95. Similar to #89, hearing my kids say, “Guess what, Mom? I love you!” :)
96. The thought that living my dream may actually be possible.
97. That after 9 months, our 3-week bathroom remodel is almost finished, and when it is, the whole contractor mess will be OVER.
98. This is kind of an odd one, but the other day I was driving down the street and saw a bicyclist gesturing and yelling at a motorist who had stopped for a red light at a cross street. He was yelling because the car had stopped a couple of feet into the crosswalk. I’d heard about Seattle’s holier-than-thou bike riders but had never seen one in action. My first thought was, “Geez, you’re on a bicycle – you’re a VEHICLE and should be in the ROAD, not on the CROSSWALK anyway!” and my second thought was, “Life must be really awful for that guy, if he can get so upset about something so stupid. If that’s his worst problem, he’s a lucky guy!” So #98 is: I’m happy I’m not that guy! Maybe better said, “I’m happy that I don’t have a chip on my shoulder”? “Happy that I don’t have time to sweat the small stuff”? Something like that. :)
99. I’m happy that we’ve come as far as we have, given circumstances, and that things will be okay.
100. Really, really happy that the weather is not bothering me, and hasn’t for a number of years (it’s a Seattle Thing…)
