I’ve done this. I currently have $228 (£111) going into my savings account per paycheck. Not a tremendous amount but as much as we can spare atm. I will mark this done as soon as we get through the holidays. I just want to ensure that I don’t stop the savings to pay for holiday expenses. The price of fueling a car these days doesn’t help… especially since we bought a new V6 :-) I hope to mark this done by the start of 2008.

I put $200 more in my savings account after Christmas. I know it’s not much but every wee bit helps. Plus, I’m proud to say that I didn’t touch my savings for Christmas shopping. I didn’t charge anything either (in fact I don’t use credit cards at all)! Yay!!!
About putting money into savings. I could afford to put a bit more in but I really can’t bear to have much more than a grand in savings for the moment as I have some high interest variable student loads to pay off. Sometimes, I get so tempted to take the 1,300. out of savings and use it to pay off a good portion of one of those loans. Then, I get my head back and realise that I need to have a grand or so in savings for an emergency like needing to purchase a ticket to fly out to Mark in case of emergency. Things will be so much easier after he’s living here. We’ll save a lot of money in plane tickets alone!
Hope everyone is doing well with this goal.
Cheers,
Sissy
Reason being, that my non-federal student loans are at 8.5% variable interest rate and I really want to wack at them by putting the maximum I can afford towards them each month. I figure I’ve got a grand in my savings account and a grand don’t come for free!
I owe close to 13,000. on the non-federal student loans and it cannot be consolidated. I tried the credit union but they cannot offer a personal loan for a lower interest rate. So, I’m sticking with it and hoping it’s not penny wise, pound foolish!
I went down to the bank and had $400 transfered from my checking account to my savings account!
My next step is to go to the local credit union that my school participates in and see what sort of account options they have. I hope to set up a Christmas fund with them.
I also need to set up my automatic deposit through work to directly put 30-50 usd per month into my savings account. I think I’ll wait till September to do this one as that’s the begining of the next school year and I sign up for the 24 paycheck option and automatic deposit at that time so it will be easy to make the changes then.
Besides, I may need a little extra cash during summer school becuase Mark is coming over for holiday and I want to treat him!
Wish me luck with this goal!
I have $750 in my saving’s account right now and over a grand in my checking. I also have a couple savings bonds from when I was little. However, even though I have some money on hand, I don’t think it’s enough for emergencies!
I’d like to set up an automatic deposit for maybe 35 dollars a paycheck to go directly into savings. This is money that I won’t touch for flight tickets to the UK or Christmas shopping or anything else.
This is money that I’ll let accumulate for an emergency situation – like if my car breaks down, something needs repairing in my home, or any other unexpected crisis. I could put a lot more than 35 a paycheck in but I figure I’ll keep it a small amount so I’m not tempted to dip into it!
I think I’ll try to set that up after my April trip to London. It would be useless to set it up before then as I’m going to be taking much of my money with me traveling.
