declutter my house

Hmmmmm. So here I am, thankfully with time to declutter. Now I just need to maintain energy and hope! I’ve returned from holiday to a digusting dump. I know for a fact I have less “stuff” than I had because I have emptied the house of so much. But what I have seems to spread out like melting ice to fill every inch of floor and surfaces. This suggests lack of storage. But I have quite a bit of storage, so actually I think it spells too much stuff for size of house. :-(

As I’m not about to buy a bigger house, I need to get rid of yet more stuff – even though I thought I’d reached the end of what I could part with. Thats the exhausting part – having to make decisions about every ‘thing’ that I own. I mean who has to go through this crap? I guess its the price I pay for accumulating and being busy. Being busy on many projects generates so much different debris. I need more order, which in turn requires more space, and we’re back to the vicious circle!

I’m going to make yet another start! I just want to get to that ‘a place for everything, and everything in its place’ stage. God knows how far I am from that. Yikes!

Dear Lord!

I’m going to have less and less time to do this fruitfully. So today I want to max out on it. I figure I have roughly 10 hours from now. That’s maybe 2 hours per main task:

1. Organise all cupboards & shelves (inc. attic cupboards!)
2. Organise Attic floor & stairs (inc. Keyb) – use cupboards?
3. Clear some kitchen, clear sofa & Organise lounge
4. Watch VHS Tapes (to dump) whilst organising desks

Here’s my decluttering wishlist. I hope you guys can hold me to it, please!
1. Organise all cupboards & shelves (inc. attic cupboards!)
2. Organise Attic floor & stairs (inc. Keyb) – use cupboards?
3. Clear some kitchen, clear sofa & Organise lounge
4. Watch VHS Tapes (to dump) whilst organising desks
5. Huge amount of Amazon/Ebay sales to list!!!
6. a) Freshen, b) dust c) clean d) tidy and tend garden/yard!
7. Move bed down a storey for new bedroom and make attic into study
8. Empty Shed and renovate it fully

Doing very well again – thank heavens! Emptied some cupboards to find they were mostly full of stuff I can dump – thus freeing up new storage space if needed, but also lightening my load should I need to move house :-)

By the end of the summer I should be left with only possessions that I need or want – rather than miscellaneous crap. This should make it easy to clean and organise and decorate – finally! Feeling better again and hopeful again. Thanks for your support – though I still need it!!!

I didn’t get it looking perfect before the trip, and it would have been fine if they’d only fed the cats on the day we told them, however later on Sunday my daughter texted to say her grandparents had been to church and ‘accidentally called round and fed the cats’ again, even though we were returning that day. I took that to mean that my mother wanted to have a nosey around the house without the pesky grandkids reporting back. Oh well.

So yesterday, Thursday 13th. My cats have had an increase in flea activity since we have been home, and the kids’ bedroom carpets were particularly unpleasant in this regard, so I decided to battle them by natural means. My son’s bedroom in particular had all of his favourite possessions out on the floor on ‘display’ (getting dusty) and has been complaining he can’t get any more stuff because there’s simply no room. I assured him that if we just reorganise his storage options (mainly under his bed in many plastic boxes) he can have a few things out here and there, and rotate them from time to time, bringing out ‘new’ things from storage and putting away those he’s had out for a while. This will breathe new life into his old collections. He collects Bionicles and Qees, the newest of which is a ‘Domo’ we bought him in Forbidden Planet. Oh and his favourite boxed model from the game Bioshock. He’s still paying me back for that one!
Anyway, yesterday I chucked all the Bionicles and stuff on his stripped bed, vacuumed, dusted, put down flea powder (homemade) and left the room till evening, vacuumed again and then put all his bionicles back on the floor. He came in and said it looked great, and that he wants to help me today (to sort out all his boxed stuff etc). It’s gonna be a huge job, there are hundreds of Bionicles in boxes under that bed…

Haven’t done so well lately. Just haven’t had the energy/fitness to tackle a whole room and doing a few papers here and there doesn’t seem like enough. :-(

Would like to capitalise on last week’s progress soon as I feel better though!

I’ve seriously got to get my arse in gear, going away again for the weekend on the 7th and don’t want to be in such a state when Dad feeds the pets.
My living room and bedroom are the worst hit areas. This is so hard when the PC is constantly calling me (finding it hard to resist) and the kids are hogging the TV so I don’t even feel I can hoover in there.

The house is still a bomb site. However, I know I’ve done a bigger clear out in the last week than I’ve done in the last 18 months or so. Real progress. If I can keep this up all summer I should end up more clutter-free than I’ve ever been in my life! Here goes…

Tonight my goal is to fill a few bags of books for the charity shop.
