Well, I have tried to reduce my gas mileage by slowing down and only using the accelerator when I must, but it didn’t seem to help much. My ‘check engine soon’ light comes on every time I reduce my speed from 60-70mph continuously down below 50 (kinda like in the movie Speed), so I should check the car’s computer and find out what is wrong so I may fix it.
As for other things in my life, as soon as I can get a day off from my night job, I will scour the county of Oakland for a good composter so that we can start getting these mountains of leaves working into rich compost. I found a recycling plant in my town called Eagle Valley Recycling Center so my plan is to get different bins in my garage to separate paper from tin cans and glass/plastic and get that ball rolling for my mom. Hopefully she won’t mind continuing this when I leave home. The plan is to get it started and make it part of our routine now so it won’t be too much to ask when I’m gone.
Between the organic waste we will be composting and the recylables, our garbage output will be very minor. But then I move to Thailand, and I’m afraid methods like this may be a bit more challenging. Perhaps I can institute a little bit of change? It’s silly to think that I can do this on a grand scale, but if I can do my share, and perhaps teach the kids in my English class about being environmentally aware, that me being “one spoke in a giant wheel” the wheel can come together and do great things…
