Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Gratitudes for June 20, 2014

Good morning. On this steamy summer day in Virginia, I am truly grateful for:
1. Telecommuting Days.
2. realizing that I have enough teabags (well, one teabag) left but that tomorrow is grocery day so I won’t have to do without!
3. baseball season! I loved it when I was a kid and then I abandoned it for football for many years but returned to it when I met my husband. I love watching the games; I love going to the games at Camden Yards and I love following the standings to see if the Orioles are still in it!
4. hearing the rumor that I will be retiring soon! HA! Yes, it is true that I am eligible to retire now (and have been for more than a year) but, people, we just bought not one but two new cars and we have two kids still in college. For those who were hoping I was going to be gone soon, sorry. For those who are relieved that I won’t be gone soon, thank you for your support!
5. Yoga Night! Truly my favorite night of the week!

Gratitudes for June 19, 2014

This morning, I am most grateful for:
1. the sense of renewal that seems to be filling my spirit, post-flu (or whatever that was).
2. my pretty, cool, comfy dress that is perfect for the important meeting I have on this very hot day.
3. pretty bras that fit! (if only you knew!)
4. my sweet, funny husband, who is down but not depressed and fighting with all his might to rebound.
5. energy to face the day!

Gratitudes for June 18, 2014

On this bright, hot morning, I am most grateful for:
1. yet another morning when I feel like I might actually be getting rid of this bug that settled in my body more than 3 weeks ago. I have my voice back, mostly!
2. enjoying hot tea and cheese toast for breakfast, looking out the window from the breakfast table at the world of green and blue!
3. fresh cherries!
4. the miracle that is eyesight, so fine tuned that I can see the shiny threads of spider webs under construction in the maple outside my window.
5. the part of me that gets it that just because people I know and love are not in a good place does not mean that I cannot be in a good place. Does that sound harsh? I don’t mean it to. It is just that it feels like I am being disloyal when my sister (broke, sick, lonely), my mother (Alzheimers and married to the Despicable Man but apparently happy), my husband (down from the manic and giving in to the beast that is depression), my SIL (for a rather wealthy woman with three wonderful kids, grandkids, early retirement, generally good health, and intelligence, she is never satisfied – first world problems kinda thing)are all dealing with stuff and I am okay within myself. Make sense?

Gratitude for June 16, 2014

Tonight, I am most grateful for:
1. the wonderful man who was and is still and always will be my father…my daddy. I miss him every single day but I know he is with me and in me and looking out for me and my mother and my sister.
2. the wonderful message that SD#2 sent to her dad today. It brought him to tears. They went through some really bad times a few years ago and, for a time, it seemed as though the damage was irreparable. So very thankful that time and love and maturity and many other things have led them to a much better place in each other’s life.
3. beginning to feel like I might shake the crud that has been plaguing me for the past three weeks. The cough is almost gone, the frog in my throat is weakening, I didn’t have to nap at all today. Whew. I was beginning to think it would never end!
4. Having enough energy over the past two days to do some housekeeping. Funny how messy a house can become when all you do for three weeks is lie on the couch and sleep.
5. 43Things still being here and feeling like a place where I belong.

Gratitude for June 8, 2014

Today, I am grateful for:
1. a safe and easy trip home; we even got upgraded on the final leg of the trip!
2. being able to enjoy my time in Minneapolis despite the lingering crud of whatever that was I had/still have (the flu? a bad cold? pneumonia? )
3. the Starwood Preferred Guest program. Not only did we stay six nights in a marvelous hotel for free, we earned enough points during our stay to get another free night. Basically, we stayed 6 nights but only used four nights worth of points! And we got upgraded to club level so we had free breakfast and hors d’oeuvres and excellent service and a great restaurant and a super comfy bed.
4. so many good books to read!
5. finding all of our kitties safe and happy when we returned. (We tried a pet sitting service for the first time and they did a great job!)

My 701st Gratitudes -June 3 2014

This morning, as I prepare for a day of exploration, I am most grateful for:
1. The continued effectiveness of the antibiotics. Only a bit of lingering congestion is not slowing me down!
2. The ease of navigating a new place thanks to Waze, Googlemaps, etc.
3. Spending the day at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. What a beautiful place! And it is huge!
4. The way my team is holding down the fort at the office while I am out. Batman and Robin will not let me down.
5. Another lovely day ahead of me,sure to be highlighted by the American-Swedish Institute and a walk along the Mississippi!

My 700th Gratitudes ever on 43T (and my 18th of 2014)

It would seem that I have reflected on a multitude of gratitudes through the years and my spirit has certainly benefitted from the reflections. As I consider this notable entry, I know that I will continue to depend upon this practice to renew my spirit in challenging times and to soothe it in troubled times and to affirm it in times of joy. So, tonight, I am deeply grateful for:

1. having recognized over the past 8 years, at the very least, 3500 things in my life fill me with gratitude: momentous things and ordinary things; funny things and sad things; things in Mother Nature and things in human nature; things that smell good or taste good or feel good; people and places and animals.
2. the feeling of warm connection that is returning between me and SD#2. It has been missing for a long, long time but now that it is being rekindled, it seems like it was always there.
3. the warm feeling that comes from reminiscing.
4. having really low blood pressure now. I used to be a steady 120/80 and then in 2007 I spiked to…wait for it…175/120! It was a stressful time. My doctor put me on Lisinopril and it has done a good job of controlling my numbers since then. But recently, I have been feeling very light headed and wobbly. So today I stopped by my usual machine for a check and my blood pressure was 92/65! I have never had a measurement so low. I expect that the next time I see the doctor, we will discuss the options for coming off the meds.
5. feeling relief that some of my fears about finances after our recent major purchase were not necessary.

My Seventeenth Gratitudes of 2014

Oh, dear! I am seemingly lacking in gratitude in 2014, if I am to judge by my entries here. It is true that there have been some challenges in the past few months, but nothing has depleted the deep sense of gratitude that nurtures my spirit, especially in the hard times. With that said, let me say that I am grateful in this moment for:
1. A wonderful family Easter Dinner, filled with love and laughter and good food.
2. Texting with SD#2 after the above referenced dinner. I am so very grateful to see that she is turning out okay.
3. My husband who is trying so hard to be okay and is getting better every day.
4. The music that filled our home as we prepared for our guests today.
5. The sunlight that fills our home.

My Sixteenth Gratitudes of 2014

Despite my current mood, which I struggle to even name, I have much for which to be grateful, most notably:
1. the good counselor who is helping my husband learn some new tools at this critical juncture in his life.
2. the wonderful people I work with who are not complaining about my rather disjointed schedule as I work to chauffer my dear husband while we get his meds straightened out.
3. the spectacular sunrises I have enjoyed the past few weeks as I hit the road early to get my husband to work before getting myself to work.
4. my friend, Charlene, with whom I enjoy an annual ritual of Lenten Lunch at St. Pauls for Cheese Souffle Day! She is one of my later-in-life friends…a post-50 gift!
5. the multitude of good books that I have been reading recently. Fiction, non-fiction, funny, bittersweet…each with a gift for me, if only the gift of quiet time outside of the stress of my own life.
