There's a little resident in the back yard.... 5 months ago

Sometimes the denizens decide it’s time to make their needs known to the resident concierge.

In this case it was simply a time to pause and reflect.

Hopefully the child doesn’t want to break into the lettuce in the square foot garden (an array of five planters actually).

So here is the reflection of the new resident…

Next time I do Windows it will be DOS... 11 months ago

I am at my wits end…

My companion’s computer seems to be periodically posessed.

The software will alternately work (or not)...

The ever popular BSOD is a regular visitor….

At the moment I can best describe the attitude thusly…

Christmas is coming... 11 months ago

This was a moment of magic…

Emerging from a shopping trip we encountered something straight out of my childhood.

Not just the old Salvation Army kettle and the hired bell ringer that has become the new norm…

No, this was an honest to G_d uniform wearing pair of genuine SALVATION ARMY KETTLE BAND players!

Nothing says Christmas quite the same as the glorious noise of a real brass band belting out Hark the Herald Angels Sing...

Civics Exam.... 11 months ago

There was a disturbing (to me anyway) headline regarding the number of elected officals who had failed a test of civics.

The test itself can be found here

Me?

I have some work to do myself… Not exactly failure, but less than I would have hoped.

You answered 31 out of 33 correctly — 93.94 %

Average score for this quiz during November: 77.6%
Average score: 77.6%

Better next time!

Reality Check. 11 months ago

I saw a sign today.

It was in a neighborhood I was driving through.

A prominent, yellow sign.

One of several of its ilk in the same block.

FORECLOSURE SALE

It brings the story to home.

This was once a proud house, in a proud neighborhood.

It was built in 1915 and had seen many ups and downs through its life.

Until now it sits.

Unloved.

Cold.

Abandoned.

Only the wind whistling through its broken windows giving gaunt song to the once proud frame of what was once someone’s home.

A recession is when someone you know loses their job. A depression is when you lose yours.

The fallout is signs like these.

Yellow Signs.

That read…

FORECLOSURE SALE

Corners cut... 11 months ago

I have been given ample opportunity to consider the ramifications of cutting corners of late.

The first involved a pending litigation where the consequences of failing to inspect a property before work was performed resulted in a total misapplication of resources such that the improvements made resulted in damage to the property as well as a completely inoperable repair.

Result, litigation.

Which due to a corner being cut, will result in more funds going to the lawyers than it would cost to pay someone else to correct the issue.

The second is a simple matter of a screw.

Provided with a fairly premium, though inexpensive piece of cabinet hardware.

The corner cut was that while a screw was provided, the material it was made from was so weak that despite a pilot hole, the head of the screw twisted off in the process of trying to install it. The result was a lengthly procedure to remove the screw parts remaining in the hole, purchase of an additional piece of hardware to replace the free one provided as part of the hardware sold, and a destroyed reputation as far a I am concerned of the manufacturer of the hardware itself.

Corners are cut at your peril.

The piper will always have to be paid.

Find your namesake Emperor... HAIL CAESAR! 12 months ago

It is a strange thingh to ponder, but like many things in life, the internet has answers for the curious.

It can be found here

As for me?

You Scored as Trajan
You are quite fortunate to rank as the emperor Trajan, possibly the greatest of Roman emperors. You have relentlessly expanded the empire and even humbled the mighty Parthian empire. Loved by all, vastly larger than life, you are the model for all future emperors. It is hard to find a bad thing to say about you. HAIL CAESAR!

Parrot talk... 12 months ago

From time to time, I get to look at companies from a unique perspective… as a customer.

Not as simple as it may sound.

You see, I also get to write about it.

And in theis instance it was the required corporate greeting.

Hello!

Wonderful.

You have been greeted.

The next customer comes in.

Hello!

I am seeing a pattern here.

As the greeting was not directed, I respond back Hello!

A look of irritation ensues.

Again…

Hello!

It reminds me of a parrot.

All that is lacking is the whistle between statements and the ruffle of feathers.

Hello!

ok…

Hello!

Polly want a cracker?

Rest in Peace.... 12 months ago

My sojourner of the Forrest lies beneath a pair of stones.

A flat one to protect him from all but G_d’s hands…

and a raised one to mark the passing of the tiny furry one that tried to give me nuts.

May G_d’s grace grant you nuts to enjoy, and may your children give mine as much pleasure as you granted me.

Go peacefully to eternity amongst your brethren.

And rest until you are called…

to gather nuts…

once again.

Requiem for a squirrell 12 months ago

A small beast, a tree dweller.

Giver of nuts.

Entertainment and a harmless creature on the whole.

I spy the dog focused over it, twitching in his tail…

Off! I command.

The dog drops and waits for his next order.

Was he the cause or merely the sentinel who alerted me to the small thing, twitching in the yard.

He crawls to put a fence post between me and himself…

Eying me with defiance.

I know that this is not normal for a squirrel.

Yet he crawls.

I cannot see if it is a leg (or worse).

Defiant.

Aggressive even.

Yet definitely not for long.

His eyes dimming before me.

Nothing I can do save grant him the dignity of death on his own terms.

I elect to leave him be.

A creature of the wild.

About to return to his maker.

The same as me…

Only the time is his rather than mine.
