Seasons of Love from the Broadway Musical RENT 8 months ago

I love this song because it’s just about living in the moment and loving those around you for every moment you have them. It’s got this amazing gospel music sound to it that is very uplifting. One of the best Broadway opening numbers ever.

Who Knew by Pink 8 months ago

This song reflects fears I have of losing someone close to me…which is all I feel I can really say about it.

You took my hand
You showed me how
You promised me you’d be around
Uh huh
That’s right
I took your words
And I believed
In everything
You said to me
Yeah huh
That’s right

If someone said three years from now
You’d be long gone
I’d stand up and punch them out
Cause they’re all wrong
I know better
Cause you said forever
And ever
Who knew

Remember when we were such fools
And so convinced and just too cool
Oh no
No no
I wish I could touch you again
I wish I could still call you friend
I’d give anything

When someone said count your blessings now
‘fore they’re long gone
I guess I just didn’t know how
I was all wrong
They knew better
Still you said forever
And ever
Who knew

Yeah yeah
I’ll keep you locked in my head
Until we meet again
Until we
Until we meet again
And I won’t forget you my friend
What happened

If someone said three years from now
You’d be long gone
I’d stand up and punch them out
Cause they’re all wrong and
That last kiss
I’ll cherish
Until we meet again
And time makes
It harder
I wish I could remember
But I keep
Your memory
You visit me in my sleep
My darling
Who knew

Losing My Religion by REM 8 months ago

Just another song that reflects my life. I grew up in the LDS church and have every ounce of my faith in organized religion stripped away from me. Religion is lost for me and so is my sense of community and belonging, and it’s something I won’t ever get back. But I’ve come to terms with it – I still have my spirituality, just not organized religion.

Oh, life is bigger
It’s bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I set it up

That’s me in the corner
That’s me in the spotlight, I’m
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I haven’t said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper
Of every waking hour I’m
Choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool, fool
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I set it up
Consider this
Consider this
The hint of the century
Consider this
The slip that brought me
To my knees failed
What if all these fantasies
Come flailing around
Now I’ve said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

But that was just a dream
Try, cry, why try?
That was just a dream
Just a dream, just a dream
Dream

How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths 8 months ago

I think because I am a “grass is greener” type person, you could say this song is the anthem of my life. I want things to happen now, but I keep waiting around for them…

I am the son
and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
how can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

I am the son
and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir
of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
how can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

There’s a club if you’d like to go
you could meet somebody who really loves you
so you go, and you stand on your own
and you leave on your own
and you go home, and you cry
and you want to die

When you say it’s gonna happen “now”
well, when exactly do you mean?
see I’ve already waited too long
and all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
how can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

Somewhere Only We Know by Keane 8 months ago

I just feel something when I hear this song. And maybe not even that it’s just about a certain actual place, but maybe that state of mind with someone where you understand them and they understand you and your souls can embrace. To me, it’s about going home to something familiar and comforting even when everything could just be gone.

I walked across, an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth, beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete
Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when, you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.

I came across, a fallen elm tree,
I felt the branches; are they looking at me?
Is this the place, we used to love?
Is this the place that I’ve been dreaming of?

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when, you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
So if you have a minute why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go, somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know.

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So, tell me when you gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
So if you have a minute why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything.
So why don’t we go, so why don’t we go.

This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go, somewhere only we know,
Somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know.

Assortment: here goes 2 years ago

OK, I am cheating here. When I don’t listen to NPR, I ‘scan’ the other stations and some songs that I always stop at are

A melange under #10

Abba: Dancing Queen
The Coors: Breathless
Liz Phair: Why can’t I breathe
Dido: Sand in my shoes
Gwen Stefani: Sweet escape
Gloria Estefan: Conga
Sheryl Crowe: Everyday is a winding road
Tina Turner: What’s love got to do with it
Michael Buble: Save the last dance for me
Eddie Money: Two tickets to paradise
Fly like an eagle: Steve Miller
Most Phil Collins

Take it easy, don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy…

OK, OK.. I will stop. I did add more, but I don’t know the singer/band names… :)

So , wouldn’t you say.. I pretty much like everything

The Beatles! 2 years ago

Before coming to the US, I did not have much exposure to Western Music. The only thing I remember is listening to Funkytown and something called Bonium when I visited my grandmother and my uncle was listening to it. I don’t know if I got Bonium correctly. I was in for a surprise when I got married. My husband had some music on when we went to sleep. I got up and switched it off and he said, “Oh no no! Put it back on! I cannot sleep without music.”. Huh.. and I could not sleep with it on. And the unfamiliar English lyrics were driving me crazy. Well, suffice to say, after 16 years of marriage, I go with the flow. I hardly ever listen to South Indian Carnatic music or Tamil songs. But slowly I started getting used to my husband’s huge collection of CDs and started liking them at first, then falling in love with some. After I started driving, around 1997, I started listening to the radio in the car and expanded my repertoire a bit more. So with this background, here goes,

I love the Beatles.. yes, all of it.

5. Defying Gravity from Wicked the Musical 2 years ago

So…I’m a musical theatre geek and so I couldn’t possibly make this list without throwing a couple of showtunes in there. The reason this song means so much to me though is because it just represents so much of who I want to be. I don’t want to care what the rest of the world thinks; I don’t want to have to play by anyone’s rules except my own – I just want to follow what I know is right in my heart and even if I have to do it all alone, then fine. I guess I peg it as the song that defined my mood and feeling while I was going through the process of deciding how and if I would tell my then-husband I wanted a divorce. It’s a powerful song to me and it always will be.

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game
Too late for second guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap

It’s time to try defying gravity
I think I’ll try defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down

Can’t I make you understand
You’re having delusions of grandeur?

I’m through accepting limits
‘cuz someone says they’re so
Somethings I cannot change
But until I try I’ll never know
So long I’ve been afraid of
Losing love I guess I’ve lost
Well if that’s love
It comes at much too high a cost

I’d sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye I’m defying gravity
And you can’t bring me down…
