Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

flyhighGrandma has

moved to be close to my parents. My Mom sees her every day when she picks up Grandmas’s dinner from the assisted living kitchen. I feel less worried about her being alone and lonely but I still need to make the effort to communicate. She’ll be 95 next month. Hard to believe and even though she’s a little hard of hearing and doesn’t get around all that well, she’s still the Grandma I always remembered. 3 years ago

flyhighJanuary 1, 2008

Update: This year I sent about 6 cards to Grandma. This seems like an easy one but somehow I ended up procrastinating half the time until the month was gone. I did get to see her for about a week in June, which was nice. I’m leaving this resolution on the list for 2008 as well. 6 years ago

flyhighI know I mentioned

writing a card to Grandma at least a whole week (it seems like) before the end of the month. Well, I did manage to get it mailed this month. Barely. Lucky for me, the 31st was a Saturday and not Sunday which would’ve totally blown my resolution (at least for this month). I’m trying not to be overly critical of myself, since my resolution is just to write to Grandma (hmmm… didn’t say anything about actually MAILING anything!) once a month. There’s no specification about it being within the first 6 days of the month. Three cards so far this year is still more than I’ve probably sent in the last 5 years combined. I feel sad about that, but I am trying to change my ways. 7 years ago

flyhighWrote to Grandma today.

Wasn’t sure I’d make it before the end of the month, with all the moving, but I set a card and stamps aside so they wouldn’t get lost and today I sat down and wrote to her. Now, I need to figure out where the post office is in this little town so I can mail it. 7 years ago

flyhighIn the mailbox

I didn’t realize today was President’s Day so my letter to Grandma is still sitting in the box. I did find the box of assorted handmade blank cards that I was looking for though, so I’ll be able to send out another card in March – only a week away now. 7 years ago

flyhighFebruary's card

Just finished a Valentine’s day card for Grandma! Yeah, I know, it’s February 15 today and for most people that would be late. However… for someone like myself who still has the gifts sitting here that I bought for my parents and sister for Christmas of 2005… it’ miraculous that it’s even getting into the mailbox in the month of February. It feels great to have a pretty card sitting here in it’s envelope all nicely addressed, stamped and ready to go. I know she’ll really enjoy it and that makes me feel good too. 7 years ago

flyhighJanuary letter

Sent my first letter to Grandma today. Actually put it in the box last night so there’d be no slip-ups today. Definitely felt good. 7 years ago

Talked to Grandma today for the first time in ages. I feel so bad that I let her birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s go by without calling. She finally called me today and we had a nice talk. What’s wrong with me that I do that?? I really love her and she’s my only living grandparent. This year I will do better. I will write to her once a month and call her on Mother’s Day, her birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. 7 years ago
