...and I was really pleased at the overall outcome. I had a chance to perform my first role in two years; I left a good impression with an established theater company (that’s invited me back, incidentally); I made a ton of new friends and professional contacts. A win-win-win situation, all things considered.

I just wish I hadn’t been double-cast (even though I really adored my counterpart—fortunately, we got along well and were mutually supportive). Given that I was the new kid on the block, it was probably a good decision on the part of the director and producer (casting a new person can be a real risk), but it also meant I had half the rehearsal time and half the repetitions that my single-cast colleagues did. I had to nail things a LOT faster, since I knew I wouldn’t have as many opportunities to get things right. That was most definitely tricky.

With the baby coming at the end of the year, I’m not sure how long it will be before I can attempt another role again. I hope it won’t be too long—I miss it already!

My performance was mentioned briefly by the reviewer from our local newspaper…I wish she had said a little more, but positive press is positive press!

Apparently, I am an “Emma Thompson look-alike”—I found this interesting, to say the least…do you think there’s a resemblance, 43Thingers?

It’s been an interesting ride….the recent floods here in the Southern Tier forced us to cancel a key rehearsal and actually relocate our rehearsals, but the show is set to open tonight and it is AWESOME! My notes from the director have been almost entirely positive for the last few runthroughs.

I wish I could perform in all 4 performances, but I’ll just have to make the most of the 2 I’ve been assigned!

The production process has been grueling, but things are coming together nicely. Tonight we have our “evil” line run, where we run all of the dialogue, scene-by-scene, and if you mess up you have to start the entire scene over again! I’m a little nervous, but I’ve been studying all day and about as ready as I can be at this point.

The show runs July 13th through the 16th—I will be performing on the 13th and the 15th, since my role is double-cast.

The cast of Yeomen is fabulous, especially the leads. The chorus is a little slow on the sight-reading, but I’m hoping that they’ll pick up soon.

I just got the phone call—I’ve been cast as Phoebe in Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard!!!!!
They said I had a great audition and they would love to have me.

Boy, this feels good! Woo-hoo! I can’t wait to get started learning the part…my first operetta role!

...I found out today that the audition results from Yeomen may not be posted until next Monday, because there were a shortage of men that auditioned! I still feel good about it, though I’m disappointed that I haven’t heard anything yet.

...and considering the fact that I’ve been running on virtually no sleep, and only even found OUT about auditions last weekend, I’m proud that I put myself out there.

I sang “When I Am Laid in Earth” from Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas. I think it was a decent performance of it—not my best, perhaps, but passable for not having auditioned in a LONG time. I also did a cold reading for Phoebe, and really went for it, despite knowing relatively little about the show. It was a fairly complicated scene, but I think my instincts served me well.

They should call me by Wednesday at the latest. I think the chief factor working against me is that I will have to schedule around show choir rehearsals in the spring.

Well, at least I won’t be sitting at home much obsessing about the audition results—I’ll be too busy with Once Upon A Mattress!

...it’s been two years since I’ve appeared in a show myself, though I’ve directed/music directed several since then. Time to get my performing chops up to snuff.

I think I have a pretty good shot at landing the role of Phoebe in Yeomen of the Guard—good mezzos are hard to find. The only thing working against me is that I’ve heard this particular company can be a little insular….so the role might go to someone who’s worked with them for a few years. We’ll see. It would be nice to have a role to sink my teeth into, but I could handle being in the chorus, I guess.
