I signed my husband up for the free introductory class at Fred Astaire! It was EXCELLENT. Our teacher, Meghan, was awesome. She taught us how to do the steps and walked us through 4 different basic steps. We signed up for 5 more classes right away! YAY for new hobbies! 12 months ago

Sadly we didn’t get to book a private lesson, as they’re held in a different venue from the group class and without a car we can’t get there very easily. Due to extra work in the lead up to christmas (more for boyfriend than for me) we’ve not been able to make the last few group classes either. I’m hoping we’ll be able to pick it up again after christmas, but it depends on jobs, as we may not be living close enough to get to the classes if boyfriend’s contracted isnt extended after christmas. We’ll see, anyway! It’s a matter of WHEN we continue, not IF. It may just be a couple of months. 1 year ago
Lessons at the new dance class are still going well. We’ve been doing waltz, quickstep and some very basic rock and roll. We touched on samba in the very first lesson but nothing more since. I think I’d really like to do something more advanced in the rock and roll, or alternatively to start with some more samba, since it’s so hard I’ve never been able to get a grasp on it at all really, but I’d like to get a handle on it!
I’m hoping that in the not too distant future we might be able to book a private lesson. I know the school only offers private lessons for some dances, including Argentine Tango, which I’d very much like to progress with. Or even Argentine Tango aside, I bet there’s loads we could improve on in the quickstep in a private lesson. Or we could start to learn the Samba or the Tango! There are endless possibilities!
I don’t think the boyfriend is as keen on a private lesson or two as I am, just because he’s sensible and knows we should be saving up money for our holiday. But we shall see. 2 years ago
We were really sad to leave our ballroom classes behind when we graduated uni this summer, but we’ve finally managed to find classes near to us! We took our second class there the day before yesterday. I’ve definitely noticed a difference in the way our old and new teachers taught; even though both were teaching beginner’s ballroom, our old teacher at uni put a lot of focus on what we should be doing with our feet, e.g. when we should be stepping on our heels, when our weight should be on the balls of our feet, when we should be sliding our feet and when we should be stepping etc etc. The new teacher has barely mentioned anything like that, but has put focus on how we should be holding our upper bodies. This has really helped my boyfriend in particular, as this week he really improved on turning his upper body to direct us around the dancefloor!
I must say though, I wish there was a bit more focus on feet and I’m glad we had already learned about rise and fall at uni, but I guess teachers just pick different starting points and improve you on the different areas as you progress. 2 years ago
Learned some old-time waltz and mayfair quickstep in the last lesson, it was really fun, everyone danced the mayfair quickstep in a circle around the room and it looked really good! (some people more than others, we kept getting lost, but it was still really good!) :D 2 years ago
Still really enjoying the lessons :)
Have even got to the point where we’re trying to improve technique, as opposed to just trying to remember the steps and move in the right direction!
Might be going to visit the tower ballroom in Blackpool soon, which would be good :D 2 years ago
Boyfriend and I had an hour’s private tuition yesterday from an ex-British Ballroom champion. It was really fun! And we got a lot done in the hour!
We decided to learn some tango as we’ve never done it before, and she really helped us with our posture too – hopefully sorted out the ‘tripping over each other’ problem we have sometimes! :P 2 years ago
Had this one on my list for ages and actually ended up clicking ‘I give up’ because I didn’t see myself having any opportunity to do this in the near future, but since I last came on here I’ve started taking classes! :D
I’ve been taking ballroom classes through a society at my uni for 10 weeks now, probably done around 26 hours worth of lessons by now and I’m really loving it!
I go with my boyfriend and have just got a beautiful pair of salsa shoes for christmas to wear to class! <3 2 years ago
