Ru ~ dig deeperChitty Chitty Bang Bang

Chitty indeed. We haven’t quite been squeezing lemonade out, but there have been a number of wrinkles with the car. First the tire & locknut incident, then we decided to get the brakes redone (just to be on the safe side), picked up a filter cleaning kit, then we took it to be air cared prior to re-insuring it next month and it failed – not because of emissions, but there was an issue with the computer system that lets you know when there’s a problem.

We took it to a good mechanic yesterday for a full inspection and just got a call that the entire internal computer system of the car has to be replaced – even with a deal (they have one for half price) it’s going to be very expensive, and that’s before we can even test it properly to see if there are additional issues.

We knew there were going to be some car issues to iron out, we did, but this is on the lulu side. Everything has hit us at once. This week only: rent, groceries, bills, credit card screw-ups (we were charged about $500 for something we didn’t buy and they’re still sorting it out) and payments (we still have to pay it off, even if it wasn’t our mistake), RRSP’s, air care, decent mechanics, previous car stuff… this has been a terrible month financially.

The bright side is that we’ve got our nest egg, a safety net I like to pretend isn’t there and never touch except to add to it. It’s there for (hopefully) our someday house down payment or emergencies. Yes, this is an emergency – we need the car, and it’s not something we can put off, but it feels completely disheartening to be withdrawing so much from it with no idea of when we’ll be able to put it back.

We’ve given them the thumbs up on replacing the computer system today, fingers crossed there won’t be too much to deal with beyond that. Knocking on wood. Knocking on chrome. Biting bullets. A pox on used car dealers. I’ll check this off after we’ve fixed the required issues and passed air care. 2 years ago

Tashina26Hopefully soon...

I bought a used car a few months ago and it came with a few kinks. It is a newer Pontiec Grand Am that was a little beat up because the owner ran into the back of someone. First I took it to get the dents out of the front of it and get it repainted. Then I found out that the fuel pump needed replacing and that cost around 350 to get that fixed. Then it needed a tie rod and that cost a extra 25 dollars. I replaced the windshield wipers with brand new ones. Then bought the best oil to put in it. Its still not as good as I want it but right now I’m saving up for the next thing… But its all worth it for my dream car. 2 years ago

PoptartNeed two things

A new starter and a new brake something because I’m leaking brake fluid. Luckily, one of my best friends is a mechanic and can help me with parts and labor. I just need some money for the parts and a little extra for his help. 2 years ago

Figured out it wasnt worth the repairs. Buying a new, nicer vehicle from a dealer so that they are responsible partly for the maintenance. 2 years ago

jaspaaugh. what a disappointment.

i need a new head gasket and a valve something or other. It is going to be 1300 bucks to fix but it needs to be done due to the fact that my car is running like shit. I have no idea where I am going to get $1300. 2 years ago

I’ve had my current car for awhile now, and I’m tired of looking at it, sitting idle in front of my house. So, my goal is to fix it, raise the suspension, replace the engine with an upgrade, and replace the automatic transmission with a manual – high performance clutch. 2 years ago

olakalaCheck!

I actually had one of my grandpa’s friends fix it for me. It needed a lot of body work… a new headlight setup, wiring, new fender, new paint, and other parts, I’m sure. He did a really great job, except now I have some electrical issues that I’m sure can be fixed by replacing a fuse of some sort…

All I know how to do is check my oil and fill a tire with air. I guess it would be nice to know a few other things! 2 years ago
