Ru ~ dig deeperChitty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty indeed. We haven’t quite been squeezing lemonade out, but there have been a number of wrinkles with the car. First the tire & locknut incident, then we decided to get the brakes redone (just to be on the safe side), picked up a filter cleaning kit, then we took it to be air cared prior to re-insuring it next month and it failed – not because of emissions, but there was an issue with the computer system that lets you know when there’s a problem.
We took it to a good mechanic yesterday for a full inspection and just got a call that the entire internal computer system of the car has to be replaced – even with a deal (they have one for half price) it’s going to be very expensive, and that’s before we can even test it properly to see if there are additional issues.
We knew there were going to be some car issues to iron out, we did, but this is on the lulu side. Everything has hit us at once. This week only: rent, groceries, bills, credit card screw-ups (we were charged about $500 for something we didn’t buy and they’re still sorting it out) and payments (we still have to pay it off, even if it wasn’t our mistake), RRSP’s, air care, decent mechanics, previous car stuff… this has been a terrible month financially.
The bright side is that we’ve got our nest egg, a safety net I like to pretend isn’t there and never touch except to add to it. It’s there for (hopefully) our someday house down payment or emergencies. Yes, this is an emergency – we need the car, and it’s not something we can put off, but it feels completely disheartening to be withdrawing so much from it with no idea of when we’ll be able to put it back.
We’ve given them the thumbs up on replacing the computer system today, fingers crossed there won’t be too much to deal with beyond that. Knocking on wood. Knocking on chrome. Biting bullets. A pox on used car dealers. I’ll check this off after we’ve fixed the required issues and passed air care. 2 years ago
