Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

DoubleNLast Night

I had dinner with Mom at Miss Mamie’s. Her choice of restaurant (it’s a rather geriatric place), but I have to admit the food was great. Great spinach salad, tilapia and crab cake, garlic mashed, and a birthday desert of bread pudding with a lit candle in the cinnamon ice cream – mmmm! She showed up early, which is definitely a minor miracle – I don’t remember that ever happening before, ever, for any event!

It was very good to see her. And we are very fond of each other. But we have never truly been on the same wavelength, and last night was a little bittersweet for me, as it made me realize again what an awful time we have trying to step into each other’s world. 6 years ago

DoubleNThank God

for the telephone! This is how we’re staying in touch, and she is so busy gardening, I think that’s fine with her, too. 6 years ago

DoubleNI managed

to wrangle an invite for my Mom also to the picnic at my brother-in-law’s house on Independence Day, and will get her out there (it’s in the country and took me months to be able to find it without getting lost). She sounded very pleased, even though the retirement village where she has a cottage will no doubt have things going on, too. 6 years ago

DoubleNYesterday

I had to carve out some time for Mom – it was her birthday. And I made the extra effort to not let my eyes glaze over while she was chattering non-stop about her button collection and people I’ve never heard of. She is a sweetie, though, and I love her dearly. 6 years ago

DoubleNI finally

made it over to see Mom in person today, and it was great! I was able to carry something into her garage for her that was too heavy for her, just talk, and let her show off her latest project – a couple of dried flower arrangements, which were really gorgeous. I need to really make more of an effort to get over there more often; she’s such a sweetie. 6 years ago

DoubleNTook Mom

and Youngest Daughter to Sunday Brunch this morning, and it was great! We’ve never been to brunch at this particular restaurant before, and it was good. Rather than the usual omelet station, they had an eggs Benedict station, which was a nice spin – excellent sauces and other choices. 6 years ago

DoubleNEaster

I will have some more personal time with Mom. Usually we attend the huge family gathering at my mother-in-law’s house; but this year I’ve decided to break away and take Mom out to brunch instead. Youngest Daughter will also be going; she’s been fed up with those family events for several years and hasn’t been going. And I decided there was no reason I had to attend them, either. Since she doesn’t consider me family, it won’t be a biggie for her, and my Mom is terribly excited to get some personal attention for a change. 6 years ago

DoubleNThough

I haven’t actually seen her in person for a while, we’ve been talking on the phone more than usual. She was in an accident on the bridge and getting her car taken care of has been kind of an ordeal. 6 years ago

DoubleNTonight

I finally bit the bullet and made some time to go see Mom, which made her night. Even listened to her talk about the health problems, button collection and people I don’t know without my eyes glazing over! All worth it to see her happiness to have me over. 6 years ago

DoubleNYay!

Just talked to Mom, who sounds so much better today! Phone call is just the thing for her right now, since I have a cold. She loves that, too. 6 years ago
