SpyrunnerThe Grand Rapids Glass Blowing company

is having a workshop for glass paperweights. It’s next Saturday and I’m still discussing this with DW. Unfortunately, it’s just over $50, but it seems like it would be fun. 6 hours ago

lobit was a

fun and educational intro to glassblowing. The teacher did a great a job! I can’t wait to pick up our pieces next time we go to Phoenix. Here is my 12-year old son heating up the glass in the furnace. 2 months ago

lovingeveryminuteA Fun Class

My mom and I signed up for a glassblowing class last September. We were supposed to make orange glass pumpkins with green glass stems (actually, the guy just gathers the stem glass while the student is trimming, but he bends it around the blowpipe and it turns out really curly and cute!

We didn’t do that. They had to reschedule the class for December and we ended up making ornaments.

My mom thought hers would be the same color as the pumpkin stem (Christmas green) but it turned out a perfect Coke bottle green. It’s really pretty and shows the indentation pattern from when she she blew it into the star-shaped form.

I don’t know what the guy was thinking, but when it was my turn, he gathered for me and then left the room…for a long time. My blob was superdeeduper supple when I took it out of the furnace and stuck it into the star-shaped form. It was so soft, in fact, that when I blew it, my ornament did not retain the fluted shape that the others had. Instead, mine has swirls!!! It’s so gorgeous. It looks like I somehow twisted it, but it was actually the only absolutely round one of the entire class.

I have always been captivated by glassblowing. Every time we go to the Renaissance Festival, I could just sit and watch the glassblowers—who needs jousting?! In Venice, we got to go “backstage” into the small, sweltering furnace room of one of the glass sellers and watch a man with maybe a 60” chest and a 24” waist blow glass…amazing! He was shaped like a cartoon bodybuilder, but wow, his work was so intricate. He taught us a lot about the art, but did not let us participate. It was fun to get a chance to do it myself! 3 months ago

SpyrunnerI'm going to take

a one hour glass blowing class to make an ornament. I’ve mentioned to my wife that I’ve always loved blown glass and she just happened to see a news segment about it.

The class is only $38 and I get to keep the ornament that I make. 5 months ago
