I put this as “worth doing” because I am glad I went – but I am a bit disappointed as the Isle of Wight was a lot more touristy and commercialised than I was expecting. We were only there for a long weekend, but I think that was enough time for us. There were so many coach parties, it was crazy!
I liked Shanklin. Shanklin Chine in particular is worth a visit on a summer’s evening as it’s lit up with subtle coloured illuminations, and it looks really magical. We also came across a lot of lovely pubs – there’s no shortage of those!
I was a bit disappointed with The Needles as they weren’t nearly as impressive as I thought they would be. There was also a horrendous theme-park area at the top of the cliffs, where you could go and view glassblowing, sweetmaking etc. or fill bottles of the coloured sand that make Alum Bay famous. Personally I thought it was commercialised and horrible, but kids would probably love it. However, the chairlift was brilliant (terrifying but brilliant) and I really enjoyed the boat trip we took out to the Needles as well.
We visited Arreton Old Village, and were gutted it turned out to be just a craft centre! There seemed to be a lot of “attractions” on the Isle of Wight that turned out to just be shops! Don’t get me wrong, they are nice shops, but it’s not really what I want from my holiday.
A lot of the tourist attractions are aimed at children, so I think it would be great for families, and the beaches are beautiful too. But personally, not having any children, I don’t know that I would rush back. 11 months ago
