Learning German for me is part of a goal I began a couple of years ago to learn 10 languages by age 40. I already speak French and have a bit of experience in Spanish (though I’d love to learn more).
Right now, I’m using Babbel to learn German—the lessons are short and the content seems to be well designed. There’s lots of great explanations on grammar and pronunciation. I also use Mind Snacks German to drill vocab and learn some new words. Eventually, I’d like to listen to News in Slow German or watch foreign films. I also have a Verbling account that I intend to use once I get a bit more familiar with the language.
At first glance, the grammar seems a bit odd. Of course, I’ve only been studying for a few weeks. Do you know of any tips or resources for assisting in learning the grammar?

Not the biggest goal in my life. It’s actually kinda silly why I decided to learn german. Other people who wanted it too, plus some Ramstein songs, plus some guy saying that women speaking german was something sexy, lol.
Today I keep this goal for stubbornness, so I will be happy enough even if I only learn the basics.
Like french, I plan to learn german as soon as I have spare time and as soon as I am fluent enough in japanese. 1 day ago
My family has a German side that I don’t know too much about. On of the places I would like to travel to is Germany and find out more about my family. To do that I want to learn some basic German so I feel more comfortable. 6 days ago
in the process..looking forward to some spare time after finishing college for that. 2 weeks ago
Added this goal quite a few months back but haven’t done anything to progress on it. Sad! Need to set some plans 2 weeks ago
until I leave for Germany!
And I don’t speak a lick of German. I went to my community ed class twice before I quit. The class was uninspiring and my heart wasn’t in it. But now that this trip is becoming more and more real, I know I need to step it up. I want to, at the very least, learn a handful of phrases that I can use to navigate the airport and politely order at a restaurant.
Can I commit to 20 minutes of studying a day for the next month? It’s certainly worth a shot. I have a great textbook with an audio CD, and I’ve also found a podcast or two that might be helpful. 3 weeks ago
im gonna do this practice about 1 hour each day its gonna finish in about 6 months to complete this 1 month ago
I did about an hour today of German learning using Rosetta Stone.
I learnt quite a bit at the time, but whilst about 80% has gone out of my head in the space of a few hours, I imagine that it will come back easier during my next ‘lesson’ tomorrow. 1 month ago
I have made absolutely no effort to make progress on this goal up to this point. What do I expect, that I will wake up and suddenly be fluent?
Rosetta stone here I come. If anyone who speaks German reads this and would fancy helping a pretty much complete beginner along then I’d be grateful :) 1 month ago
Actually use my Rosetta Stone software, and get Ralph to teach me. 1 month ago
