Participate in Habitat for Humanity
Just did it today 4 weeks ago

I’ve always wanted to volunteer for Habitat, but never have…until today! It was pretty fun because a few of my friends were there, and I got to meet some new people. I learned how to put down some wood flooring too…those laminate kind that go together like a jigsaw puzzle. Apparently they do it around here about every Saturday, so I think I’ll be back soon. :)

Not Building but Cash Helps! 10 months ago

Well, I didn’t help build any houses this year but I just got a letter from the local HFH organization that said that it costs, on average, $110,000 to build a Habitat for Humanity house. So, I got the checkbook out and made a donation.

Done! 11 months ago

It’s not over, as I’ll want to help again, but today I reported for duty, had a slice of pizza and then sliced and nailed a bunch of finishing panels. Most of the work was done during the summer, but I’ve gotten to assist, met some great community members and also got to work with one of the new home owners. It’s great to have finally done this, and it was great to learn some things about finishing work and construction.

Scheduled for Saturday 11 months ago

I thought all my summer travel had voided the possibility, but I got a call today and am not committed to actually accomplish this task and help with the construction of one of the three houses they’re building in Missoula this Saturday. Woohoo, only a couple days until this one is accomplished!

Bagdad's House 1 year ago

Finally got to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. My task for that Saturday was to help paint unit number 52 which has been assign to a gentleman who calls him self Bagdad.

Bagdad helped me paint the 3rd floor and for part of the day his family offered to help so I got to spend some time with them painting the 3rd floor. Having had some experience with muslim culture I knew how to interact with them without offending (I’ll attach the picture I took of Bagdad but of course his 2 daughters and wife I didn’t take a picture of (against their culture)
His daughters then left (they had to report to work on that Saturday (hey no different from how I used to work on Saturday when in college).

Once we were done with the 3rd floor (one coat of paint). I then moved on to the 2nd floor, where I met with a gentleman in the Army. Had an interesting conversation about how he could further his education. I got to tell him about GoArmyEd (the project I’m working on now) and how the website could help him get an education while in the Army

During lunch I met a guy with computer problems so I offered to send him a link to my blog explaining in 3 parts how to secure your home Computer.

I think I had a day full of good deeds now back to being the sinner I am :)

What is Habitat for Humanity ? 1 year ago

Well Habitat for Humanity is a non profit organization that aims to build homes for people that do not have a home. You can volunteer as part of the workforce and give them x number of hours of your time, you can donate building material but more effective would be to donate money to them.

http://www.habitat.org/

Ex. President Jimmy Carter is a big supporter of their work

My goal in all this is to volunteer time building a home for someone who needs it and they have an organizational set up that allows me to give a Saturday to this cause.

To find a location that you can volunteer at take a look at the following link
