Last summer the local art walk made the process of visiting multiple galleries in one fell swoop so so easy and delightful.
The art walk also became the occasion for a sort of ambiguous date that escalated a flirtation into something that was inadvisable, a little awkward, but also fun and delicious and fleeting.
The museums are still my go to places for meeting up with people and also for eating lunch from time to time. 1 month ago
are not so far from me and last weekend made a major dent in this goal.
Art in the Streets was completely worth it, the strange artificiality of seeing this work inside the museum complete with tagger animatronics (!) was offset by how effusive and comprehensive the installation was. The whole thing – giant virtual quotes and dollar signs hovering above skateboarders (guarded by museum guards) taking on the Geffen contemp ramps which seem to have been made for boarding – deserves a second visit. 2 years ago
are my go to meet up spots. had a fun sunny chat with a former student at one today, ran into another friend and his extended family, and did a little holiday shopping at another. 2 years ago
of a couple of gallery shows in the neighborhood. putting on the to do list for the weekend and we’ll see what I make it out to…all within easy walking/biking distance so… 2 years ago
friend to the museum, just before the Baldessari closes tomorrow. she had never seen the Serra sculptures (huge – literally and emotionally – favorites of mine).
and it was great to go back and see the honey dew and bitter melons abundantly growing. a nearly safety orange-colored overripe bitter melon burst open with bright red jewel like seeds spilling out of it was spectacular – like pyrotechnics. 2 years ago
to both the Craft and Folk Art Museum and to LACMA today. On the 2nd floor Aaron Kramer work was delightful. Anyone who’s motto is “trash is the failure of the imagination” is a hero in my book. On the 3rd floor the idea of curating assemblages around the broadly interconnected ideas of race, gender and globalization, is so vast that the range of works included was almost too much for me. the ideas and experiences represented were of course insanely complex, somehow overall I had the impression of clutter, rather than assemblage. but there were absolutely strong and striking pieces within.
I found the Baldessari retrospective at the BCAM to be immediate and engaging. sometimes strikingly simple, but always asking, demanding participation. often hilariously irreverent.
We had a fun hunt for gardens as part of the Fallen Fruit EAT LACMA. Somehow the bamboo lattice with it’s cross breeding of BITTER melons and honey (SWEET) dew melons made the biggest impression. the melons themselves, in all their various stages – flowering, small and fuzzy, fat and round with vertical yellow stripes emerging – just looked so good! 2 years ago
at the museums and galleries in my neighborhood is a good strategy.
I have some quick sketches of central american pottery (lovely bulbous abstractions of animals, with round bellies). it’s a great way to really look at the forms and think closely about their functionality.
next up: go to the Natural History Museum and sketch. 3 years ago
