How are you people building your credit scores. The only ways I know is to keep the balances on your credit cards as low as possible, be on time with all your payments. I’m paying off my car. Would you recommend any of those agencies that help lower your score, and why?

Holding rock steady...  — 2 weeks ago

...at 645, for the last three months. Sucks that it’s not going up, but at least it’s better than having it drop.

Back up to 645...  — 2 months ago

Probably because I paid down a couple balances.

Awwww....  — 4 months ago

It dropped this month… to 637. I’m pretty sure it’s because the balance on one of my cards went way up, very nearly maxing out the card. I have to get that balance back down and not put anything new on that card!

Hmmm  — 5 months ago

Haven’t checked my scores lately. Maybe I’ll do that this month and see how much farther I need to go.

Tiny improvement.  — 8 months ago

Went up more slowly than I thought it would… went up two more points this month, to 594.

C’mon, 600!

Slight improvement.  — 8 months ago

Went up 8 points to 592. I’m hoping to hit 600 next month.

Dropping...  — 10 months ago

2 months ago my score was 676.
1 month ago my score was 628.
This month it’s 584. sigh.

Mostly the reason for the drop isn’t that big of a deal, it’s just that I bought a truck (adding a lot of debt to my load) and opened 2 other accounts in the meantime, also (a credit card and a finance account at a furniture store). I’m told that once it’s clear that I can handle payments on these new accounts while keeping up with my payments on older accounts that my score will go back up.

The new credit card I got is pretty cool in that it updates you monthly (for free!) on where your credit score is at, and if it’s on the lower side, give (free!) advice on what steps you can take to raise it.
