Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

There’s something evigorating about planting a seed and watching it grow. I imagine that this is what having a child is like. you take something so small, and seemingly meaningless and turn it into something beautiful and large that can create more of its kind. Whats more beautiful than that? 7 years ago

Eating lettuce out of your own backyard is sublime. 8 years ago

'matt! bennett!it's incredibly soothing

pretty arrangements of colorful flowering vegetables, herbs, & berry bushes do double business: they look incredible AND taste great!

“weeds” are actually pioneer plants and can and should be your friends – they can act as “cover crops” to shield the bare earth from harsh sunlight that would dry out your soil & heavy rains that would erode away some of your best soil

mulch, A Lot!
put down straw or cut grass or trimmings from bushes all in-between your plants – it will help keep your soil moist, will slowly break down & create healthy soil, and will provide food for helpful little critters like worms & other creatures that keep your plants happy!

check out the book Gaia’s Garden – it’s filled with tons of tips to make gardening easier by letting mother nature do more of the work AND it’s wayyy interesting and well written

enjoy! 9 years ago

Free Morphemeprogress gaining speeeeeed

SATURDAY: had another meeting administrators at McKinley and it went REALLY well – they are so open and excited to be involved with this and have us be utilizing their yard….

SUNDAY: got a donation of two bags (about 3/4 of a bale) of hay from an adorable girl in JP who is moving and can’t have her rabbit anymore. sad for her and the rabbit….good for me and the garden!

MONDAY: talked to ms. cascino, director of the recycling department of boston – said she was just about to get back to me, and had gotten some people to deliver it for FREE and that they would get it here this week or the beginning of next!!!!!!!!

NOTE: i need to remember to take “before” pictures of the yard before the compost even gets there. !!! 9 years ago

1 – i have land (mckinley school yard, 50 St. Mary St, Boston, MA)

2 – i am going to get free soil, hay and compost

3 – i have plants (in the greenhouse)

everything is happening, and i am so happy.

i have a vision of me and several of my friends or people that are becoming my friends sitting in the garden, casually weeding and puttering, snacking on strawberries or cherry tomatoes and being the happiest we could be. gardens are the happiest places, my friends, they truly are. 9 years ago
