Stephen FrickStepping up and Taking Over

I’m a small business owner who contracts with businesses to do technical work and marketing. What I found is I’m not a manager, I’m more of a contract employee. What I need to learn is how to make those clients delegate more and in turn how I can step up and take over without making them feel nervous or out of control. Feeling in control is what every company wants, but the problem is when they are in control of the things I do, they aren’t spending the time doing the things they need to focus on, like products, sales and services. I’ve put this task on my list of things because I think I could learn a lot about being a manager rather than being an employee. 15 months ago

Safyre HindsStep up to the plate

I don’t know what it takes to become a manager. It’s being pushed on me to “step up and do what is needed” all of the time, but without any training or guidance I’m pretty much at a loss to what they want me to do. However, I know I do want to become a manager in the next two years, whether it’s in this job or the next. I just have to figure out how to properly work with people.

Does it involve goal setting? Managing expectations? Implementing new procedures? Simply keeping employees on task?

Figuring out what a manager ‘does’ is the first step of actually becoming one. I’ve had such piss poor examples of management, I know I don’t want to fit their mold. I have to make my own. 2 years ago

hebawomILM update

So, I got my first essay score for the ILM course and got 79%! So quite please with that. Also completed my first CIH essay, but had to take 3 days leave to get it completed on time!
So going good so far! 2 years ago

hebawomStarted the training

Currently undertaking the ILM (institute of leadership and management) level 3 training this year (9 month course) and a masters in Housing (4 year course part time). After promotion in October, can’t go any higher without managing a team. So once done ILM course can start looking at potential roles. Hopefully opportunities arise within current company as really enjoying it so far. 2 years ago

Work hard and listen and you’ll get there. I’ve managed a multi format 5m+ store for a few years now. I’ve also promoted a lot of managers.

First key is to want it.

You also have to know what you are getting into. Be clear on what the job expectations are.

Then just do your job. Listen and take opportunities to expand your knowledge base when the opportunities are offered.

Finally, let your boss know! If they don’t know, they can’t help you. No one is going to go out of their way to find you – you have to make your intentions known. Once your boss knows, he or she can be proactive in your development. 3 years ago
