Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

TrishokelAfter graduation

My husband and I went to Oregon to see our son graduate from the Fire Fighter’s Academy. We were going to go out to dinner, but some of the graduates wanted to go have a celebratory drink. My husband, myself, my parents drove home. We had just sat on the sofa to look at the graduation pictures and I pulled up one that I knew my dad would make some funny comment of he and Andy…when he didn’t, I turned around and he was “gone”. I immediately jumped up over my mom and grabbed the phone calling 911, my mom was shouting to my dad to see if she could wake him….I yelled downstairs like I have never yelled before to my husband to come up from downstairs. I saw him coming up, I ran into the bathroom to talk to the 911 operator. Mom removed dads teeth. I told the operator, dad was not breathing, not responsive. The fire department was only a mile away and they had just been on a call along with the ambulance…I gave my mom the phone when my husband said we were doing CPR, we got him off the sofa, laid him down….I cleared his throat, tilted his head back and compressions were started, then I started mouth to mouth. At first I forgot to pinch his nose, but my husband reminded me and we were good. I probably blew harder than I needed too, but I remember in 1981 when I took CPR that I couldn’t get the chest to rise and I was going to give my dad all that I had! We got a pulse, but lost it again. Within three minutes, the Fire Dept was here, they shocked him and got a pulse. The ambulance was right here as well as the rescue rig. They called a Code 99 when they were transporting him to the hospital, from what my mom said. As soon as he got to the hospital, he was given medication to paralyze him because he was then placed in ice therapy. Within 24 hours in ICU, my dad was wiggling fingers and toes, but he eventually did get a defibrillator implanted. We are so grateful for our Fire Department, the same one where our son works. It is amazing how all the stars were aligned that day…..I kept telling Andy, our son, that he was going to have a call that evening, little did I know it was going to be his grandfather, but again, luckily he was out with his friends until I called him to come home. This was the most wonderful experience to be able to save someones life, and my dad’s life to boot! I will admit that I do become pretty choked up when I hear about an unresponsive patient or watch the reality show Boston Med, it is still very close to home. I never thought that I would save anyones life, I always thought that is for the chosen few, but I am overwhelmed with pride that I could be a part of such a wonderful experience. this kinda ties in with the become a doctor thing 4 years ago

This morning around 7:00am I heard my doorbell ringing non-stop. I quickly ran to the door and it was my neighbor and I noticed her face was purple and she had this horrified look on her face and holding her throat. She was choking on her medicine that she took earlier. It was lodged in her airway. I quickly grabbed her around the stomach and gave her the heimlock maneuver. It took quite a few tries, but it finally came out of her mouth. I was very scared that she was going to pass in my arms. Even after all the medicine came up, I kept hanging on to her. I was exhausted beyond any explanation. I gave her some water, she thanked me, I gave her a hug and we both went back into the world. I was drained emotionally and physically. There is a funny feeling that I got afterwards, a feeling of happiness and a feeling of just be so mentally drained. I really havent talked about it much to very many people, but I did share it with my pastor and my wife. 4 years ago

I saved my husband’s life. I was a bit stunned that I needed to do this and forgot to tilt his head back and plug his nose at first. Called 911, gave mouth to mouth until the paramedics arrived. I felt quite calm until the next day when I knew he was fine then I had a few minutes of feeling like I was falling apart. 4 years ago

I regret saving this person’s life, they’re nothing but selfish.
High maintenance, snobby, fussy, whiny piece of shit. 4 years ago
