Need in west central Illinois. The closest lupus support group in Illinois is in Chicago. There is a growing need to offer support groups, medical links to free or discount drug programs and promote awareness to this disease. I have been dealing with Lupus for 8 years. I have watched my mother battle this and lose her battle from complications. Women refer other ppl to me for advice, assistance in getting help, and support. Right now I act as a friend but I think its time I look into making a non for profit group.. any advice welcomed!!I like the idea of a grass-roots type, that acts as a wholelistic help based network. 2 years ago
Well…it all started in October when I was frustrated with my path in life. I wanted to make music. I’m dreamy, but I don’t pipe dream all my aspirations. I was really just trying to figure out how I could continue to do music and make it sustainable. I was a recent college grad (Class of ‘09), with a gloomy prospect of finding a “real” job. When you’re a musician, I swear everyone wants a piece of the pie. Everyone is out to screw you – especially the venues. It’s like…I’m brand new to this world but i have to have 25 ppl show up for me just so I can get a percentage of the door price. How the hell am I suppose to get 25 ppl when I don’t even have 25 fans to call my own? Not only that, I already poured all my savings into creating a demo, making copies, and making them look presentable, had business cards made, still trying to just work on my craft, etc, etc…. but at the end of the day…what was I doing? Why am I making music? I just wanted to play music. Of course it’s a nice feeling knowing ppl want to listen to you…but, if I can’t be heard at a venue, and the same musicians go to open mics all the time, how am I suppose to have a genuine fanbase?
So…I decided to sing at a food truck. That’s right, a food truck. And then I made up a lie and said I was from a collective called “Stop & Listen LA” which was BS because the collective was ME. But, somehow it clicked. I started to recruit more musicians at open mics and asked a few friends to starting busking with me in this project. I then thought I needed to protect it so I approached a lawyer, told him what I was doing and HE said…this should be a non profit!! He read my mind, but I couldn’t say it before because I thought it was crazy.
So many things have happened since. All the food trucks love the idea, musicians love the idea, and I just filed the articles of incorporation two days ago…which means Stop & Listen LA is a legal corporation. I hope to file the 1023 forms soon! So much to come!

....but it’s highly worth it! My goal was to work in urban education, so I wrote the business plan, got the required paperwork approved by the city and state goverment, created a Board of Trustees, and started hiring. Now two years later, I’m running a large (> $4 million) and more importantly successful non-profit.

Hi all, I am a chinese, I live in China. I lived in Canada for 10 years, as 1 year in America. I speak both languages. I would like to start a international NPO, or a NPO from america or Canada, as it is hard to apply in China. My goal is to help and improve people’s thinkings, so they will care each others a little, true to each other, have a heart.

My city has no comprehensive food security policy. I want to change that. It will be tricky, because there are lots of people with a stake in this particular area of “poverty alleviation” (not that they’re making much headway in alleviating poverty, of course)... I think that the solution is to create a non-profit lobbying group that pushes hard for policy that it then ensures is put into practice, to the benefit of all hungry people. 4 years ago
