Mark#3 Daddy Day Camp

To get things rolling here, Mwahmwah has done an awesome job locating some of these movies and the watching is on. I am kicking the list off with #3, Daddy Day Camp. So far, I am 1/4 of the way in and I have some comments to make, thoughts to share, etc.

This is exactly the kind of move that this list is made for. I am totally in agreement with the IMDB crowd here. This isn’t a movie with a low budget and terrible actors doing its best to make something that, although childish and amateurish, at least may give you a moment to pause, a second to think. This isn’t one of those films that starts off a little roughly, with a very improbable or nearly impossible beginning, only to, if not overcome its early difficulties, at least allows you to enjoy some element in the way the story plays out. As well, this movie isn’t one of those movies that has good moments and earns some interest and goodwill, yet in a puerile and lazy way uses some pathetic plot flaw that the film makers hope the audience won’t notice to bring the movie to some necessary conclusion. I don’t think this list of 100 movies is big enough to include those movies. This is not to say that the adjectives: childish, amateurish, rough, improbable, puerile, lazy and pathetic aren’t well suited to this movie, they are, just that there is no good in this movie.
This movie is one of those rare achievement (at least the first 1/4 is), where nothing of quality comes from the movie. There is no moment where you can relate to the protagonist. By the way, the protagonist is Cuba Gooding Jr. Although he has selected more than his share of crappy movies, he is still one of the more likable guys. Still in this movie, you don’t care if he lives or dies… I could go on for hours about the problems in this movie, but I will focus on just one. Here, Cuba and his sidekick (who is like norm from cheers without any of the personality), are taking their kids to their childhood camp and they have to drive by the competing camp, which in their childhood, was a crappy camp. Since then, the camp has become every kids dream of fun, so much so, that they added a lake. The team get to their childhood camp and it is about to be forclosed on by the bank and it is closed. To prevent this from happening they partner with the owner and run the camp. They know nothing and the kids are in constant danger. Now, I can root for a person who puts kids in constant danger, and I can root for someone who screws up and makes a bad business investment and does whatever they can to make it work. Hell, I can even root for an anti-hero who is just out to benefit himself/herself at the peril of everyone else. What I can’t root for is a guy who is so concerned with his sons camp experience that he won’t send him to the camp that he wants to go to with his friends, but instead buys a crappy camp because he went to it as a kid. What is worse is that he hated the camp when he was a kid. That is why he didn’t want his kid going to camp at all in the first place. So what is the motive for buying a camp you hated? There isn’t one, so they just forget about that part and make the central conflict between him and the olympian camp owner next door. Again, I could root for the underdog here if the camp owner next door was mr. Perfect, but he isn’t. They protray him as a jerk, so now we have two jerks. I am sorry for ranting on here, but the movie is that stupid.

I am looking forward to part 2. I can’t wait for the camp games to happen and the two of them to bet camps on who wins. I am sure Cuba will win, but I have no idea how this will grow him as a person. Time will tell. I am just thinking about how much I would rather be watching Mr. Woodcock right now. That movie looks funny (although by the number of positive reviews it has gotten, it may very well make this list)...

I have now seen the whole movie and I don’t know what to say. Everything from the first part is entirely true, although -careful, spoiler here – he didn’t bet for the camp. The movie is bad. I don’t think it is #3 bad, bad, but it is bad. Moreso because I don’t think they thought they were making a bad movie…

On to another movie on the list. 5 years ago
