When I was in Washington DC last weekend, I thought I would take a walk by the White House as close as I could get just to see it. I didn’t really have time for a tour or anything…
So, I was walking toward this place called The Ellipse, this sort of circular grassy area in front of the south lawn of the White House, when these police officers on horses made everyone leave the area saying that it was now closed. All of us that were in this area walked back some distance but moved to an area where we could still catch a glimpse of the White House. We could see that there were people gathered on the south lawn, reporters maybe, and they seemed to be waiting for something. There were men dressed totally in black standing on top of the White House with guns, probably snipers ready to protect against threats to the First Family. I took a couple of pictures and was about to leave when we saw the President’s helicopter approaching and then landing on the south lawn of the White House.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t see who was getting off or onto the helicopter as it was facing the wrong direction, but the crowd around me was eagerly hoping to catch a glimpse of the President. One girl who had binoculars claimed she saw Sasha and Malia (the President’s daughters) though I or no one else saw that. After a brief time, the helicopter started to take off again, and I got a picture of it (see the attached photo, I’m glad my camera has 12 times zoom). Some of the people in the crowd around me started waving and yelling “Bye, Obama!” as the helicopter flew overhead. Who knows if the President was in there or not…
