Guide to plan resupply/town stops on the go (this is the only way to do it-planning further than 5 days ahead on your thru-hike is massively futile). How I did it: I started on May 10, 1999 at Springer Mountain, GA and finished atop Mt Katahdin (ME) on October 15, 1999. The hottest day was 115 degree heat index in Virginia. How I did it: I read a lot of stuff online to get an idea of what I was going up against and I did a 6 day section hike a year before I decided to do the whole thing. I saved up about $4,500 (although a bit more is preferable) for the trip. The trail is a blast and there a so many neat people you meet out there.
