How I did it: I knew some letters since school and learned all alphabet when last year got a deaf-mute classmate (actually i really respect people who can speak without speaking, and language of gestures always intrigued me). But during one year studies he came maybe around 10 times only and actually i was too shy to try to comunicate in his language. How I did it: I took a couple of semesters of ASL in college. The courses were taught by a hearing person but there was no doubt that she was well versed in the language and values of Deaf culture. I have forgotten most of the vocabulary since then, as I had rare occasions to sign, but I retained the cultural values, some grammer, and a few basic signs. I can fingerspell decently, so I can communicate in a pinch, though I've never yet… Read how I did it…
How I did it: It has been hard to learn since my opportunities to practice have been limited but i practice using videos and sites every day and practice with my mom who speaks a bit every day and i have a very large vocabulary and can understand and sign with a large vocabulary.
