Warm white sand beaches, crystal indigo seas, romantic Caribbean nights, world-class hotels, restaurants and nightlife. This is Cancun! World-renowned fishing, diving and snorkeling, archeological sites dating back thousands of years, a balmy tropical climate and water sports galore…this is Cancun!

Cancun is definitely Mexico’s showcase resort. The original developers and the Mexican government can be proud of what they have accomplished here. Built in a location that was named by Mayan people, long ago, for the large number of snakes in the area, Cancun has been carefully groomed into one of the most polished resorts anywhere. Long gone are the snakes and most of the mosquitoes that might have enjoyed the numerous lagoons. Few resorts in the world have the infrastructure and amenities that were built into Cancun from the beginning. Everything just seems to flow together effortlessly in Cancun. This is one of the reasons that Cancun is Mexico’s most popular resort, the other reason being… Location, Location, Location.

Around a thousand years ago, the Mayan civilization in Mexico started to prosper and spread, eventually founding its only coastal town just south of modern Cancún. After the Mayan civilization ended, tropical jungles hid Cancún from the rest of the world until the 1960s, but through developmental initiatives, the government officially christened Cancún a city in 1974. With its fine, white sandy beaches, turquoise water, and a seemingly inexhaustible amount of sunny weather, Cancún developed into one of the world’s most celebrated tourist destinations very quickly. Spectacular hotels and resorts, a wide assortment of restaurants, and an array of nightclubs have opened by the thousands.

The Hotel Zone is the most happening area, offering visitors a concentration of the city’s best dining and nightlife destinations. Water sports of all kinds occupy most visitors during the day, and a cacophony of live music fills the night from clubs and discos throughout the city. A shopper’s best plan of action in Cancún is to head to one of the malls, such as La Isla Shopping Center or Plaza Caracol, but Market 28 or other small markets are also nice choices for bargain hunters. A tropical paradise loaded with modern amenities.

Went here in 2001. Naturally, the beaches are the biggest draw in Cancun with their soft, white sand and brilliant turquoise-blue water. Cancun’s Hotel Zone is really just one long beach separated from the mainland by a system of lagoons.

The beach restoration project that took place following Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 has restored Cancun’s beaches even bigger than they were before the hurricane and they are better than ever

The dazzling white sand of Cancun’s beaches is light in weight and cool underfoot even in the blazing sun. That’s because it is composed not of silica but rather of microscopic plankton fossils called disco-aster (a tiny star-shaped creature).
