We got back from a long hike yesterday evening (looking forward to a relaxing night) to find yuckwater in the kitchen sinks and all over the counters and floors. Upon further inspection this extended to the washing machine, which seemed to be partially full of some sort of murky liquid with green shreds that M. referred to as a “crap salad”, though thankfully this was figurative not literal.
After a lengthy clean-up of everything, some plunging, drain cleaner, boiling water, and more cleaning, we cleverly decided to run an empty mini-load to clear out the washer. This was okay for a while, then suddenly both kitchen sinks started to rapidly fill with nastiness faster than we could bail it out with big buckets.
After another lengthy and frantic clean-up (trying to battle the overflowing water before it reached the carpet) we decided it was too late to call the owner and would stunt all efforts until the following morning.
Today we rang upstairs as soon as we heard someone awake, and they had the plumbers over within two hours (nice, because of course it’s a holiday). The plumbers checked things out and decided they needed to go back for the big snake, so we waited for them to come back.
Eventually, after violating the house pipes with a 60 foot snake, the pipes were clear, but they’d tried to hit 4 different spots, so there’s a lot of cleaning up to do and furniture to realign, especially in the bedroom where water got all over the carpet. The plumbers were kind enough to clean up some, but had grabbed our pretty new tea towels to do so (now black rags). Sigh.
Now it’s started to rain. Yay BC Day.
Bright side? 1: Now it’s taken care of, and 2: If we’d gone away this weekend the people upstairs would have kept using their water (which was flooding our place) and not known… we would have come home to an absolute nightmare, so I’m going to just be grateful for small mercies and look forward to a long bath tonight after the house is all cleaned up. 9 months ago
