I created a font based on my handwriting back in high school. It was fun, but tedious… It gave me a real appreciation for font-making, because it took a lot more time than I’d thought it would… Just to perfect the alignment and the sizing differences. But I didn’t really have any particularly special font-making software—just some freeware I found on the web. It was so satisfying, though, to pass on the font to friends and type up letters in my “own handwriting”. hah 7 years ago

Check out this book: Logo Font & Lettering Bible it’s a very straightforward guide to thinking about fonts and simple designs like that, it has tips for drawing in illustrator and common ‘gotchas’ that you might forget about.

Finally, just check out fontforge it works for MacOS X AND it’s free. Barring that, i might check out Type Tool or Fontlab, but it’s not worth spending your money if you don’t even know if you really want to make fonts.
