Travel the Silk Road

Istanbul to Beijing by bicycle 2 years ago

This journey has become somewhat of an obsession of mine. I suppose Asia really has been my conitinent of longing, for a long while now. However, I’ve only been to Indochina and the Aegean coast of Turkey so far; wow, they were wonderfull themselves. Also, in July last year i cycled with two friends for three weeks around Tasmania, and that trip really opened up my horizons o the posibilities of exploring other parts of the world by bicycle.
The Silk Road however, the whole way across the continent of Asia, is now my new goal. Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Xinjiang, and China. I’ve got wonderfull expectations in my mind; but also am aware of how hard it’ll be and of the prospects of failure. Well, for now I can only research, plan, finish off my studies at uni (BSc), and work to get the money i need to undertake this adventure. Also, I’ll have to find one or two others to do this with – more fun and safer.

I’m starting to think about this journey – Istanbul to China overland. Summer 2008 (after I graduate) is the tentative date.

I will be doing this starting at the end of July, going east-west, from Almaty to the Crimea, and leaving from the Crimea in the first couple of days of September. I’ll definitely want to stop in Taskhent and Sochi, and maybe check out the Aral Sea. This trip will be by train as much as possible.

If you’d like to come with me, let me know! I’m looking for one or two fellow travellers.
