My great-grandmother taught me how to crochet.
I am so happy, since it was time that she spent with me before she passed. Now whenever I crochet I think of her. I plan on teaching my children, and their children, and so on.

These things SUCK. I’ve watched three different videos on youtube on how to make them and each time it made no real difference. I can’t figure these out! They look simple enough but in practice they just don’t seem to make any sense at all. I even asked my mom to show me – which says how desperate I was – and now I’m doubting her ability as what she called a “double crochet” was NOT a double crochet! I’m more confused than ever…
In the meantime while I stew on that, I’m crocheting a soaker. The pattern doesn’t say how large it is, but it turns out it’s pretty small – like newborn size! Now I need buttons…
Maybe I’ll leave the granny squares alone for a bit and try to learn some of the lacy techniques. I got this pattern in a crochet/knit newsletter, and entertain hopes of one day making this for myself.

Since crocheting blankets and dollies run in my family…I think I should learn how to keep the tradition alive. Tried a couple of times but got really frustrated…so now that I’m home for a while, I’ll try to take time to learn with patience.

When you crochet you are making something with a piece of yourself. It is a great relese. I like to meditate and think of the end result and how this peice will be in someones life years from now. When I started I learned the basic chain, and 3 stiches. From there I have made pillows, blankets, hats, botties, dolls. I love that I can touch peoples lives with something I have made.

I have experimented with the single, half-double, double and treble crochet stitches, and I’ve got them all down fairly easily. I made some baby booties… but they turned out all weird. I read, reread and then reread the pattern again and I can’t figure out what went wrong. I think it was just the pattern and not me – that DOES happen sometimes!
Next I want to learn granny squares. I intend to make a rug for our bedroom. (:
It’s a fun skill! Learning how to knit certainly made learning this easier, too.

In addition to knitting, this skill would just be amazing in my little arsenal of “I can also do this…”.

Shanti is Groovin in the Bliss
Our group meet and we watched a dvd on how to crochet. I really still don’t get it. Going to take a class at locale knit store. I am dyslexic and it seems to br rearing its head with learning to crochet….

Almost there!
I went and bought a pack of crochet hooks tonight, and pulled out the “the happy hooker” book I bought a couple years ago and started going. I didn’t get far until I joined the Learn Crochet group on Ravelry and watched the videos in their video page. It was like a light went on. I crocheted a little bowl in a circle.
I can do a single crochet and crochet in a circle now. Not bad for one night, and they don;t look too bad either! Soon, I will be crocheting up a storm.
