go to a Powwow

i think that this fall the entire family, like 12 of us are going to get a cabin in southern ohio so that we can go hiking in the caverns. but southern ohio also has pow wow’s. SO, i’m hoping i can find one that coincides with the cabin reservations days and everyone can go. i think the brother-in-law and his wife would REALLY enjoy it.

On Sunday I went to my first powwow. My friend and her mother have some Native American blood, and they invited me to go with them. The dancers all had such beautiful and unique outfits. We had fun.

I heard a pretty song and followed it to this one vender’s table, and he was playing a small ocarina. The sound was really surreal so I thought it was a recording and he was faking it or joking around. But then he put it down and picked up a pan pipe, then a different size ocarina, a wooden flute, etc. making these beautiful sounds come out of what I thought to be simple and cheap decor or children’s toys. It just amazed me…and also made me feel a whole lot better about the pan flute I had bought earlier! I thought it was defective!

Yeah, well. . .it’s not going to happen

I used to go to 2 pow wows a year with my ex. I always had a great time, saw some amazing dancing, and (often) bought crafts/jewelry.

One of the retarded people I worked with in my first incarnation of working with retarded people was a Lakota from South Dakota. I used to take her to powwows all the time. I even got to dance once, because she dragged me into the ring for the intertribal dance.

This may have to wait until next spring, since the season is winding down now, but it should be easy now that I’ve started hitchhiking to get around long distances, and I have more native freinds now to let me know when and where stuff is going on
