I used to have a shih tzu but he passed away last October, almost a year ago and my house feels empty and strange without a dog in it. I’ve always had a dog, so this is new and weird to me. I would like to help a dog in need by adopting from a shelter, I feel that one of the best things anyone can do for a living being is to give it a loving home. I visit shelters on a regular basis, but I’m waiting until I find my perfect canine match.
I was at a shelter today and met a miniature pinscher named Jersey. She was so tiny and skinny and it was fairly cold in the kennel, so she was shaking. Her previous owners gave her up because they didn’t have enough time to care for a dog. My heart broke for her. I would have loved to take her home that minute, but I need to get the rest of my family on board first, which could be difficult.

Whenever I’m bored I got on this website and look at all of the adorable dogs I could get. However I am waiting until I can properly take care of a pet. Someday….

good company

Archibold is from a shelter and apparently he is in good company as the Presdient Elect has declared that the First Family is seeking a shelter dog as well.
I am sure that after all these years of advocating for shelter pets, we’ll all see a significant change in our cultural attitude toward our best friends!

justjoan917 is enjoying the sunshine and can't wait for the weekend.
My family did this five years ago and we have the most wonderful dog. He’s a lab-chow mix and right from the beginning sensed that we rescued him and done nothing but try to please us. Wherever we are, he wants to be with us. He senses when we’re sick or sad. He smiles. He loves our attention. He’s the best thing that ever happened to us!

I love dogs, but I’ve never actually owned one since my parents never wanted one. I visited an animal shelter a couple times and I am determined to adopt a dog once I move out and have proper living situation for a dog.

is a wolfhound mix. You can see how cute he looks when he’s had his hair cut (left). He looks like he used to ride-the-rails and cook cans of beans over an open fire. The folks at the shelter had nicknamed him Cornelius… which is also an ‘old’ sounding name, but we named him after my husband’s grandfather’s banjo : )

They told me he was going to be put to sleep the next day. Maybe they say that to everyone. Still, he’s been a good dog, going into our 12th year together now. “I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world” and little Whitty comes running.

There are too many dogs in shelters! I adpoted my first dog last year. She was labeled “aggressive” and “special needs”. She’D been adopted by an elderly couple, kept for several months and then brought back because they couldn’t control her. She was days away from being put to sleep, and although the shelter actually discouraged me, I took my chances. I took her home for the weekend to see if we were a match. She never went back. I got her for $50, and she’s the best dog! I guess they never walked her, because as long as she gets lots of love and a daily walk, she’s perfect! We adopted our second (and last) dog yesterday after fostering for a month- a little beagle. If you’re unsure about the cost or the commitment, foster a dog and see what it’s like! There’s nothing like the love of a grateful shelter pet!

But realisticly, this just isn’t possible in my current living situation. For this me to get a dog, one of three things would have to happen 1. I have to move, 2. Boyfriend has to move or 3. Boyfriend and I break up.
Given that #3 is just a horrid thing to even consider, I’m left with #1 and #2 and since we’re both homeowners neither of these are likely any time soon.
