How I did it: The Long Bar is situated up some stairs toward the rear of the Raffles Hotel, one of the oldest and most expensive hotels in Singapore. All their rooms are suites and will run you about $600 a night. You can't get to the Long Bar from the lobby, you have to go around the side and up some stairs. Once inside, it seems in great contrast to the overly clean hotel. The floor is covered in peanut shells, tossed by patrons who are constantly supplied with free baskets full. The bar is open air, so birds fly in and out. The bar is also cooled by overhead old fashioned ceiling fans. There are pictures on the walls of great wrters who spent a lot of time here: Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling, etc. It was also here, that in 1915, Ngiam Tong Boon, created the Singapore Sling, a concoction of various alcohols and fruit juice, that goes down easy but has quite a kick. They are a bit pricey here, and other bars offer them with a variation for less, but if you want the original in its original location. This is the place. Another intersting drink in the Long Bar is the yard of beer, a long narrow glass of Singapore's Tiger beer. It has a round bottom, so requires a holder to stand it in when you want to put it down. There is a story that the last Singapore tiger was shot under the pool table in the Long Bar after running in and taking refuge there. The feeling from being here is overwhelming. How I did it: I was in Singapore (in Raffles)

I ordered a Singapore Sling in Raffles hotel, Singapore a couple of years ago. Raffles is a strange place – the floor is carpeted with shells from peanuts, and there are little birds hopping around everywhere. Which is a bizarre contrast to the otherwise incredibly formal environment (waiters in dinner jackets and bow ties etc.) Oh, and the drinks aren’t cheap… ;) 6 years ago
My dear brother, nearly as clever as me and MUCH much wiser, is currently working in South Africa for a multi-national. He’ll be reposted in the next year or two and is in line for being in charge of the Far East. Singapore or Hong Kong will be his choice of home – I’ve been to HK loads of times so I’m hoping he chooses Singapore! 6 years ago
One of my dreams…its on the list now so it WILL happen. Its the magic, you write it down, it happens. 6 years ago
we sat in raffles and ate lots of free peanuts, (we’d spent all our money on slings)
while men in tux played music in the background
then we went to the loo en-mass and ogled at the gold taps in the toilets
we then strode out into the night (very steamy and hot outside) and were awestruck by the christmas lights
I only have warm fuzzy recollections of that night…
I blame the slings 6 years ago
The thing is to go to the Long Bar at Raffles where it was invented. We did that. The slings there were tasty, but expensive, so we left to a cheap place down the road and got another round of slings, which tasted completely different and then too many beers. 6 years ago
