RoadWarriorXI did...

observe the minute of silence! I made sure to take my lunch break early and sat in my car with the windows rolled up as to make sure it was as quite as possible! Reflecting on peace was difficult since there is so much violence in the world! 6 years ago

Barbara is back to her normal selfAn hour late

I wasn’t able to observe the moment of silence at noon, because that was when I was still dismissing my students, so I did at 1pm – which was noon in the central time zone, so I figure it still counted. 6 years ago

wic77Almost forgot it!

Because I’ve had so much to do in my workplace, I even have to go to work in the weekend. :( But I’ve decided, that I won’t play any “wargames” today, which I do sometimes. 6 years ago

to hear the words on the button our friend was wearing on her jacket when she came over tonight (she didn’t know that this was International Peace Day):

Peace is sexy.

curstkateI'm sick, so I slept through noon.

But I still had a moment of silence. I could hear the fish pond in my back yard.

I lit a candle and put it in my window. As I lit it, I said aloud, “I light this candle in support of International Peace. Let it start with me.”

Also, for some reason, my cats have been fighting today. The last time, just a few minutes ago, I told them, “Stop fighting. It’s International Peace Day.” And, they did! I don’t know how long it’s going to last, but it’s very peaceful in my house right now. 6 years ago

Pajodama isWhat my moment of silence told me:

P* PATIENCE

E* ENCOURAGEMENT

A* ACCEPTANCE

C* CARE

E* ENRICHMENT

What a difference we would be able to do in this world if …
1.
we have patience to hold on to the bad times waiting for the good ones to come.*
2.we encourage people to achieve for what they want.
3.we accept people for who they are.
4.we care for the weak.
5.we enrich our souls by truly accepting “The Golden Rule”. 6 years ago

soonforgetA military coup in Thailand...

I closed up my shop today at noon, shut everything off, and chose to reflect on what is currently happening in Bangkok. There was a coup de’tat in Bangkok on Tuesday (nonviolent) and there are currently tanks rolling through the streets and a midnight curfew. The Thai military says they will appoint an interim Prime Minister within 2 weeks and draft a new constitution within a year.

General Sonthi Boonyaratglin appears to have the backing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and the business people of Bangkok are in support of the coup.

I can only hope that this political action remains non-violent, and that the people of Thailand are able to restore deomocracy to their great nation in a timely manner. 6 years ago

RuthGMy moment was observed

amid the noon tolling of church bells from St. Ignatius Church, around the corner.

I want to say, my deep desire is for peace with justice. I don’t hold up or seek peace at any price. I don’t believe in cutting a bargain with injustice that will allow injustice to remain entrenched—for example, to say, “OK, you can keep all the land & other belongings you took away from the poor people of Colombia, as long as you just stop shooting them.”

I do believe in a peace that is costly, that is hammered out from & entwined with mercy, justice, & an awareness of shared humanity, shared existence on & with the earth. We are far from it in our world. I will continue to seek it.

Real peace would be marked by justice for all, especially for the poor & for the earth. 6 years ago

soonforgetPeace in the world

May the world find peace with itself today, even if it is just for a minute. One minute at a time, perhaps one day this idea won’t seem so foreign to people. 6 years ago

“A SILENCE THAT IS HEARD AROUND THE WORLD
—San Francisco Examiner, Sept. 19, 1984,
Noon, International Day of Peace

BACKGROUND OF THE ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE (21 SEPTEMBER)

The International Day of Peace, established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly, was first celebrated on the third Tuesday of September 1982. Beginning 2002, the UN General Assembly set 21 September as the now permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

In establishing the International Day of Peace, the United Nations General Assembly decided that it would be appropriate “to devote a specific time to concentrate the efforts of the United Nations and its Member States, as well as of the whole of mankind, to promoting the ideals of peace and to giving positive evidence of their commitment to peace in all viable ways… (The International Day of Peace) should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”

The Assembly’s resolution declared that the International Day of Peace “will serve as a reminder to all peoples that our Organization, with all its limitations, is a living instrument in the service of peace and should serve all of us here within the Organization as a constantly pealing bell reminding us that our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace. May this Peace Day indeed be a day of peace.”[Quotes excerpted from the United Nations General Assembly Resolution UN/A/RES/36/67]

“The Assembly, reaffirming the contribution that the observance and celebration of the International Day of Peace make in strengthening the ideals of peace and alleviating tensions and causes of conflict, (decided that) beginning with the fifty-seventh session, the Day should be observed on 21 September each year, with this date to be brought to the attention of all people for the celebration and observance of peace.”
