I saw Amartya Sen speak at my alma matter tonight. He received the Nobel prize in 1998 for his work as an economist studying the causes of famine.I’ve been out of the intellectual circuit for too long; I couldn’t follow the lecture as much as I would have liked to. But I was honored to sit and listen to him; to observe him. 5 years ago

NPR had a program a few weeks ago on the contagiousness of yawning. Though it was fascinating to listen to, I found myself yawning through it. Then, a few weeks later, I was at the Grand Canyon and I spent a bit of time hanging out with the mules. One of them yawned and made me yawn, so I decided to get back at him. I yawned in an over-exaggerated way in his face one or two times, and then he yawned back. I yawned again, so did he. It was sooooooooo funny! 5 years ago

I was in the Grand Canyon in early Autumn, which means it was rutting season for the elk. The sound that came to me through to forests in the night and early morning were unlike anything I would have expected. Haunting. 5 years ago

L needed some branches cut, so I gave it a try. I was told after the fact that an electric chainsaw doesn’t have nearly the power that a gas-powered one does, but I retorted that it doesn’t dilute my experience: I’ve now cut through parts of a tree that I would have never before imagined possible. 5 years ago

I’m not a fan of white chocolate, but I couldn’t resist trying S’s white chocolate pudding after I found out how much he enjoys it. M told me that S said that when the sexiness of their newlywedness wears off, he’ll be turning to white chocolate pudding for satisfaction. It was yummy. 5 years ago

I’ve tried to learn to knit several times, and I’ve always failed. This is particularly surprising because I’m great at crocheting – you’d think that one yarn craft begets another. But no; my fingers learned one skill and for years they refused to learn the other. But I’ve always made my knitting attempts with needles; recently I received a knitting loom and found that using it is a cinch. I turned out two knit hats between last night and this morning. Quite a different style than a crocheted beanie! 5 years ago

L had a dream of her long-dead father, and as she told me about it in the morning it was clear that she was a little disturbed. She said that it seemed he was trying to warn her of something. That evening I was reading my novel and I happened upon a part where it was described what the spiritual main character does when she dreams of someone dead: she prepares their favorite meal and serves it for dinner to ward off any bad omen they are bringing. I told this to L and she liked the idea; she said that her father’s favorite food was fresh-made corn tortillas covered with butter. Within 15 minutes she was inside patting the batter together and dropping them on the skillet. Sharing in the meal meant a first for me: I’ve only ever had factory-made corn torts and the thick, steamy, home-made variety were a whole different world. 5 years ago

I was at the pumpkin patch with M and the gang, and when lunchtime rolled around I had a hard time finding something that would satisfy my hunger and allow me to avoid eating meat. They ran out of BBQ corn two minutes before I reached the front of that 1/2 hour line, so I decided to give up any striving to eat healthily and I jumped over to the funnel cake line. There I saw something I’ve never seen before: deep fried oreo cookies, 4 for $3.00. I would have passed it up entirely if not for this goal; the first thing that went through my head is that these would definitely contribute toward my ‘try 100 new things’ goal. I asked about a half order, but that was impossible, so had to pawn off the others on my friends. As it was I ate two of them and that was way too many. Yummy, but too intense for me. Worthwhile, though, simply for the “yup, I actually tried those” storyability. 5 years ago

S opened a long-awaited bottle of chocolate port to celebrate his new employment. I was in the bath when M served me the first glass of it, so the experience took on a feeling of high luxury. Steaming water calming my soar muscles, occasionally someone entering the bathroom with a boiling pot off the stove to keep the bath tip top, no-quit bubbles with coconut scent clinging to my skin, and an intensely delicious and decadent wine served to me without even the need to request it. 5 years ago

I was trying my hand at some sculpture this morning. The result was alright – definitely still a ways to go before it looks the way I want it to. But I was surprised to find that more often I held the piece I was working on with my right hand and shaped it with my left hand. When I first noticed this, I switched. I figured that the result would be much better if my dominant hand was shaping things, but that way actually felt more cumbersome and I didn’t like the way the clay formed under my right hand’s control. So I switched back to left-dominance and had a better time of it. 5 years ago

I’ve never known my mom to have more than 1/2 a glass of wine, but last night she was feeling feisty so we polished off a bottle together. She didn’t get sloppy, just looser than usual. 5 years ago

A rice cooking wine. Out of the bottle, its sweet and mellow tasting. Im thinking of marinating chicken breasts in the Shitake dressing and while broiling the chicken, brushing it with the Mirin to create a nice glaze. Then serving the bird on a bed of veggies (cuke, carrot, avocado, red pepper – everything I used on the sushi) and rice. Served with pickled ginger, soy sauce and wasabi. 5 years ago

I like those Geico commericals! While I was not eagerly awaiting the TV show, I was curious. I’ve watched approx 5 minutes of this show and it’s 5 minutes of my life I will NEVER get back. 5 years ago

I have not eaten fast food in a very long time. I ended up working late, trying to take care of errands, the last thought was coming home to cook a meal. So I took my $2.14 to Taco Bell for their newest creation. It has cheese, beef, rice and sour cream wrapped in gummy tortilla. It tastes like everything else on the menu. And I just saw the commercial…ewww! I feel gross and somewhat used…. 5 years ago

I ate the home made sushi with the chopsticks I purchased when I bought the bamboo mat. I didnt realize there was an etiquette involved! I also have been holding them wrong. I confess, I got frustrated, but I’m going to keep practicing. Using chopsticks makes me concentrate on my food and not the TV or paper or whatever I’m doing while eating. 5 years ago

Ahhhh … soy products! I always get to try a new one when I visit with Viejo. Today it was Morning Star BBQ ribs. So yummy, so BBQ-y, so perfectly textured. With products like this available, why does anyone still eat animals? 5 years ago

I’ve been letting my armpit hair grow as it wants for some time now. People don’t usually notice, and I don’t usually care when they do. I recently started feeling a little self-conscious about it – maybe after my grandmother sat me down and told me it wasn’t lady-like :) – but I hate to shave all the time, so I came up with this solution: put peroxide on the hair and make it a little more discreet. Now the hair is the color of my skin and no one can see it unless they really look for it. Fine, discreet.
But I’m inspired and I may go for a new level of indiscresion – maybe I should bleach it totally blonde, dye it green and yellow, go for punk-rock arm pits. It’s autumn now, so grandma wouldn’t have to know the difference! 5 years ago

I’ve always heard the title Debbie Does Dallas but I’ve never seen it. The other day a friend who has the movie on DVD let us borrow it. It was funnier than hot. I was particularly pleased with the non-perfection of the girls. Some were heavy, some had small and sagging breasts, one even had a large scar on her abdomen. Refreshing to have a little glimpse of reality on a fantasy film. 5 years ago

I washed my face with tea tree oil this morning. It felt so tingley that it almost burned, but not quite. My skin felt so alive afterwards, and it remained soft and glowey all day. Also, a nasty little breakout that I’ve been dealing with for a couple of weeks now was greatly decreased by just a few hours later. Time to research other uses of tea tree oil! 5 years ago
