How to play in an orchestra
How I did it: I started taking violin lessons in middle school. In highschool, I started playing in the school orchestra. I also played in the college orchestra and a community orchestra.
Lessons & tips: Check and see if there is a community orchestra or a community college orchestra and join that.
Also, learn to read music, because you have to play with the group and know what you're doing.

..in a professional one, once i finish academy, and hopefully go to a foreign country for some more schooling.
in the meantime, i’d like to audition for the challenging youth orchestra i have in my mind. to experience all there is.
and i know that there’s still a lot of practice in front of me, but i also know that that’s just the thing i was meant to do.
won’t let any fears drag me down ever ever again!
i simply thank God for my cello, thank him for everything he has given me and everything has in store for me.
love You

I just recently auditioned for the youth orchestra that I mentioned in my last post, and the process went well and smoothly. The song sounded great (if not a bit quiet), my nerves did not go haywire on me, the day was beautiful and Saratoga a great town to be in—and on top of everything, rather than having to wait on tenterhooks for two weeks, they notified me later that evening that I had been accepted!
But. Slight snag. They allowed me to join the wind ensemble, not necessarily the orchestra (because there were no extra flute seats in the latter ensemble). Should this count as “playing in an orchestra,” or should I wait until college when I will undoubtedly be into another?
Last year, I auditioned for a local youth orchestra and although I was overqualified and I am a damn good flautist, I was not accepted because I choked during the audition. With so many solo types of things this year (All-State auditions, NYSSMA, and the solo during our band competitions this April and May) I should hopefully overcome my stage fright problem and be accepted this June. :)
apparently i have been invited to join a renegade marching band here in pittsburgh… that counts as an orchestra right? kinda?
I’ve played violin since 2nd grade and picked up viola in 9th grade (now 26 years old), played in a metro youth orchestra through highschool but had to give it up in college. Now want to play in an orchestra again and Baton Rouge has no civic symphony!
When I picked an instrument in 4th grade, i picked alto sax. So that means I can’t play in the orchestra. So i started playing bassoon a year ago and can play a level 6 solo. But i need a new professional bassoon so i sound good. I also want to learn Viola but our money is not limitless…
I can’t play any instrument but still I think it’s just wonderful to play in an orchestra. well, and this is my dream)
I’m 47. I started playing cello in June, and I’ve already done a bit of simple duets. I’m determined. I was a musician in high school and college and really miss playing with others. I played flute before, and now instead of being a soloist, I want to be part of the “whole” – part of that swell, the big sound.
