My estimate is pretty rough, but I think it’s more important for it to be a good ballpark figure to set the stage for a deeper understanding of the relationship between you and the green dolla’ so that’s what I went ahead and did. The resulting figure seemed like a lot of money in the end, but it didn’t completely shock me. It seemed about right, I guess. I must not be one of those people who has dramatically overestimated or underestimated their ability to generate money… which is a good thing I suppose.

I’m reading Your Money or Your Life and one of the first steps it recommends is that I figure out how much I have earned in my lifetime. It seems like a silly and sort of tedious exercise, but the reasons it suggests it are pretty interesting. It’s a good grounding step. It helps you figure out if you have any inaccurate myths about yourself involving how much money you can and have made in the past. Here’s a list of my previous jobs:
- Irvine World News paper route
- baby sitting
- UC Berkeley cafeteria
- Russo’s Pets
- Todo Loco/World Wraps
- Pizza Hut
- Circle K
- Seattle Art Museum
- JFA Development
- Amazon
- Robot Co-op
There have been a few other tiny sources of money like my self-published novel, freelance web development, Amazon associates fees, etc, which I’ll probably throw in there as well. Now I just need to figure out how much I was made at each job, and add it up. I seriously have no idea how much it’ll be. This is just the kind of exercise that I like to do though. You should do it too!
